csm manga spoilers ahead [up to ch. 77]
during the reze arc, we see a lot more of makima and her relationship with people throughout the manga, which can lead us to draw some really fascinating conclusions from her relationships! how cruel of an existence it must be to want connection and be unable to do anything but control. how horrible it must feel use and to be used and to know nothing else! what a pitiable life. its barely one at all.
this is particularly evident within the movie spree makima brings denji on. denji doesn’t quite relate to the people around him—he’s got this subtle disconnect that comes from growing up the way he did. he doesn’t react to the movies the way anyone else around him does, and makima is much the same. she lacks that connection even to other devils, save for chainsaw, whom she seeks it with. the one scene that impacted the both of them was the poignant one at the end of the final film they viewed. a desire for a connection that neither of them had experienced. makima saw that and knew that she will never be known and knew that she is true to her nature to the very end. but denji looked over at makima and saw that she didn’t see him at all. throughout csm, he’s used as a vessel for her to get closer to the chainsaw devil, and even then, she only wants the chainsaw devil because she sees herself finding connection in that.
i think there’s quite a lot to be said about makima and her desire for connection and inability to do anything that doesn’t involve control. she wanted connection from the chainsaw devil and it seems to be the closest thing she’s ever felt to love, but she doesn’t see denji at all despite him truly caring for her. to an extent, it was her subtle control that led to the way he thought of her, but his lack of exposure to kindness in his early life is a significant factor in the way that things developed between them! she’s horrifically manipulative because it’s all she can really do.
