Space between us is a truly generational fic. Been revisiting it with boyfriend and I am truly still obsessed. These two have had my heart for years. Everything still holds up so much better than I’d dreamed- the business plot line is so elegantly executed and so achingly accurate. I could say a thousand things. Perfect perfect fic. Thanks forever @cleversnail
I dive deeper into this fic and the grittyverse as a whole on college radio:
In which Kas teaches Sawyer all about the Lego movie fandom and its Grittyverse. They discuss their terrible illnesses, teenage dysphoria, a

Coppernauts Week 1
Prompt: New Outfit
Warnings: swears
the most remarkable thing about coming home to you is the feeling of being in motion again// it’s the most extraordinary thing in the world
B sits in his Charger in the parking lot of the Space Corps, impatiently looking at his wristwatch while he waits for Benny. He thinks how one of these days he should teach Benny how to drive, though he knows that’ll probably never happen. All in all, he loved Benny, as maddening as he was sometimes. Waiting to pick Benny up after his latest space flight was just one of the many quirks of their relationship, but he wouldn’t trade any of it for the world.
Benny had sent a message six hours ago saying they were on track for re-entry and landing at 15:00 hours and post-flight checks “should only take two hours this time”. It’s well-past 17:30 and B grows more and more impatient, though for no other reason than he deeply misses Benny. Moonbase missions are important, but keep Benny away for months at a time as chief flight engineer, making sure all the ships are in good working order and that Moonbase Beta is functioning as best as it can. If there was an award for most long-distance relationship, B often thinks, surely he and Benny would win it.
Just when B considers popping into the lobby and asking around for Benny, a familiar sight comes bursting out of the glass doors of the main entrance, his bright red hair as unruly as ever, making a saint’s halo behind his head. B can’t help but smile. Instead of his usual blue flight suit, Benny’s wearing a flight suit in a hideous shade of burnt mustard that clashes magnificently with his hair, two inches too short in the legs and wrist.
B tries his best to stifle a laugh as Benny unceremoniously deposits his shoulder bag into the backseat of B’s car and slumps into the front seat, pouting murderously.
“Changing the colors up, Ben? Are ye Ben Mustard now?” B chuckles but Benny doesn’t share his humor.
“You’re super funny,” he says dryly.
“You forget to pick up your space dry-cleaning?” B smiles, turning the key in the ignition.
“Funny story actually,” Benny says, rolling the window down, “somehow all of my clothes got jettisoned along with the garbage on descent.”
“Oh dear,” says B. Joke’s over. “So that explains the--” he motions to Benny’s outfit.
Benny groans. B knows that groan-- it’s the wind-up before a very loud, very long rant. B steels himself for the oncoming storm.
“I’m gonna kill Red!” Benny gestures wildly, voice at full volume, “rule one of pranks: don’t forget where you put shit! I’m piloting the ship, I’m just about to start deorbit sequence, I’m looking at three different screens, Yarrow asks me if the garbage is 10-4 to 86 and OF COURSE I’m gonna say 86 that shit, because WHY THE FUCK WOULD MY CLOTHES BE IN THERE! Red was all “sorry Blue I’d thought you’d have checked if your clothes are missing” now WHY WOULD I CHECK MY LUGGAGE WHEN I’M IN THE MIDDLE OF INITIATING DEORBIT SEQUENCE, REDDING.” Benny throws his hands in the air in exasperation.
“I’m sure you’ll get him next time though, eh?” B says, more than familiar with the pranks Red and Benny played on each other. This was definitely one of the more extreme ones and he can’t quite suss out whether or not Benny is truly upset or just playing up the drama. Regardless, he places a comforting hand on Benny’s knee as they drive down the highway.
“This suit is from SKYLAB, B. SKYLAB. It still smells like the 70s,” Benny says dramatically, holding out the lapels with a disgusted look on his face.
“Ah Ben it’s not so bad,” B gives him a crooked half smile. “Bit short though, eh?’
“Oh my God don’t get me started,” Benny digs around in his pockets for his phone, grumpily pressing buttons, “Yarrow had Liaison dig me up a flight suit for landing but APPARENTLY no one knows how tall I actually am.”
Benny’s height is always a sore point with him, and B decides it best to leave the rest of the conversation be. He’s happy enough to sit in silence, relishing in Benny’s presence next to him.
“Sorry that you haven’t seen me in months and your first view is this 1970s realness,” Benny says. He turns to B and caresses his thigh.
“It’s funny,” B says, and quickly backpedals before Benny can reply, “Ah no, I mean.. Not that you in the outfit is funny, it’s--” he gives up with a sigh and keeps his eyes dead ahead on the road.
“You’re fine, B,” Benny says, a smile in his voice. He leans across the seat and kisses him on the cheek.
“How long do I have you for now?” B ask, eager to change the subject. The last thing he wanted to do was upset Benny any more.
“Three months,” says Benny, hand still on B’s thigh.
“I’ll suppose we’ll have to make the most of it then,” says B, “can we start with dinner?”
“I’m not going to dinner dressed like this!” Benny laughs, loud and good-natured. “How about we go to my place and you can help me out of this getup and we take it from there?” Benny says, low and teasing, his fingers tracing their way up and down B’s thigh.
“Mm, yes, that’s a grand idea,” B says, blushing behind his sunglasses.
