It only struck me now that given that Zael gets married to Calista at the end of the game, this makes him Count Arganan’s nephew-in-law.
Imagine the shenanigans that would’ve happened if Arganan survived the events of the game and was there when Zael and Calista got married.
Arganan freaking out internally but he knows that Jirall’s dead and he can’t exactly stop Calista and Zael from marrying each other at, and ALSO it would look great if the savior of Lazulis got married to the next-in-line for the Arganan family so he HAS to go with it. Arganan is reluctant but goes with it because he knows it was his own fault that the island was nearly drained of all life because he messed with its half of the Outsider at the time, and he really needs a time to look good right now.
Arganan and Calista slowly making amends with each other because they have a *lot* to talk about. It’s messy but it eventually gets better. Zael does his best to be supportive. They fight, they make up. It’s rough, but eventually things just do get better.
The entire family working together in battle, for instance. Arganan can’t fight all that well as is so he just hides behind a pillar or something, but he’s probably watching Calista and Zael duke it out with the enemy and they’re yelling, back and forth:
The former Count of Lazulis is awestruck at this, and it only hits him NOW, FULLY, that they’re now officially related. And so internally he’s like “oh crap I’m related now and I’m going to have to get along with him for the rest of my life or until one of us is dead so I might as well make the best of it.”
So what does he do? He manages to get in a sneak attack on one of the last few enemies, being like “Get your hands of my niece and my nephew-in-law” and just does some epic spell or something that helps them finish off the enemy.
As the dust settles, Zael is like: “...Did you just call me your nephew-in-law?” Because Arganan, prior to this, acted formal and polite to Zael because he was married to Calista but he didn’t necessarily have the closest bond with him or anything. But this? This changes *everything.*
And Arganan internally is like “SHIT” as Calista gasps.
Zael later tells Syrenne, Lowell, Mirania and Yurick about it, and they get a laugh about it.
