One of the first appetizer to be served was this Kani Miso Chawanmushi (Japanese Steamed Egg with Crab Brain Paste). If you asked me, this looks really unappetizing but then, look can be deceiving. I love the umami flavours the crab miso imparted to the otherwise ordinary egg custard. But then not everyone in my group appreciated this dish, some called it fishy.
Each order of the dish came in small plate like the Chuka Iidako (Marinated Baby Octopus) and Ajitsuke Tsubugai (Seasoned Whelk) which is good if you are a small eater, so you don’t waste food.
Pidan Tofu (Century Egg Tofu) was uninspiring. It was plain and dull with neither sweetness nor creaminess like the chef forgotten to add the seasonings in. I remembered it was good the last few times I was here many years ago.
It was not difficult to choose between the Tamago Yaki (Sweet Egg Omelette) and Mentaiko Tamago Yaki (Sweet Egg Omelette with Mentaiko Sauce). It’s like plain Jane meets Cyndi Lauper, the latter visually more appealing and better tasting, not the singer, mind you but the mentaiko omelette. The warm charred salty and creamy sauce contrasted nicely with the cold sweet egg is something you have to experience yourself.
Psst… There is a rabbit among us. :D Someone had asked for a couple of helping of leafy greens. The Yasai Sarada (Green Salad) was actually not too bad with the sesame soya dressing.
