Let your child lead the way! Yeah- totally up for it BUT ONLY if they don’t make lots of mess I hear you cry! The importance of Sensory Art Play being a child-led process art LAB is this: babies and toddlers are wonderfully multi-sensory beings who discover the world through all their senses. We need to give them the space to discover and experiment for themselves, to enable confidence to grow through making their own connections and problem solving. We create a space where they freely explore through the building blocks of art and creativity: Sensory Art isn’t just visual art. From the last Sensory Art Play class these are a few things I observed in the babies and toddlers: In a non-toxic messy play space they LISTENED quietly- digging around inside, and pouring crunchy cereal in the play bins. One baby watched it wiggling between their toes when a bit got stuck there. They TOUCHED colour through squidgy paint, their ‘hands on’ colour mixing directly on their bodies, layering on and scraping it off repeatedly. The SOUNDS of splats and traction from cars on the giant mural paper. Texture investigations a plenty through surfaces of cards, papers, structures- scratched with fingernails, torn up paper balls being rolled around. Patterns growing all over the floor through footprints and rollers. The parents engaging with their child through copying them: Non-verbal communication before words, through first scribbles, first mark-making, the pre-cursor to writing. I watched a parent and their toddler communicating purely through tearing paper, creating a rhythm taking it in turns to listen to one another- fast, slow, long and short. Such a beautiful focussed environment- not coercing your child to take part, but in their own time, finding their own rhythm. Excited to start the new term on Tuesday- where we allow growth, slowly over time. Just ONE spot left!
