Yes, I am still moving to New Zealand very very soon! May 12th to be exact! I am not sure what the process is for Australia, but you are right, because they are both connected to each other (since they both are connected to Great Britain), the process might be a similar one. 

I honestly recommend you to NOT go for a Resident Visa quite yet. At least from my own information and all the stuff I read, you need to be in the country legally for at least a year before you can apply. I am not sure if you have been there before or how long you have been there. I think maybe a Student Visa (if you are a student) OR a Visitor’s Visa might be better. 

I know that just to enter Australia for more than eight hours, you must buy a Visitor’s Visa. (I had a layover there for twelve hours and I was forced to buy one even if I didn’t leave the airport -cries- fucking rip off.) 

Actually, I don’t even know what country you are from, so maybe the regulations might be different. If you are from New Zealand or Great Britain (and I think maybe... other islands owned by it) you can enter the country and be there for as long as you want (PLEASE DON’T QUOTE ME ON THIS, I looked a lot of stuff up but I don’t remember it all verbatum.)

You will also have to have proof that you can afford your stay there as well as a bunch of other shit. I am applying for a Student Visa because I am aiming to finish my studies there, so if you want to it this way, this is how mine went. AGAIN, THIS IS FOR NEW ZEALAND AND IF YOU WANT A STUDENT VISA. Maybe it’s different for Australia so definitely definitely check up with Immigration. Call them or email them. I have called NZ like... seven times by now. No shame.

To get a Student Visa first I gotta be accepted to a NZ school.

I began with getting a transcript from my current university. This took about like two months because my school is fucking SHIT. So if you’re school is shit, order them early. In fact, just order them like ASAP. 

Then I have to get a certified copy of my passport. Certified is an important thing. Funny thing, in the US this is actually illegal. You cannot get a certified copy of your passport. So what do you do? Well, I know what to do, but I don’t want to jeopardize my chances so I will tell this only in a private message. ;u; So if you want to know, message me in private! 

After that, I got my application (mine had to be printed and mailed) along with my transcript, filled it out, got my certified copy, and sent it to the school. 

Like a week later they got it and then like three days later I got accepted. YAY! So after this, it was time for my Student Visa which is, HA HA HA, one of the most stressful experiences I have ever gone through so far. 

My advice is to fucking start early. START AS EARLY AS YOU CAN. TODAY. Like you cannot start early enough. 

First you need your Offer of Placement (Acceptance letter). 

The school might/might not offer travel/medical insurance so make sure of that by calling the school or by asking them if there is any insurance that is connected to the school that they recommend. Both travel AND medical. 

You need Evidence of Funds which is either six months of bank statements proving you have money to survive, OR six bank statements from the person paying your education OR a little thingie from the bank that says that you/the person paying can afford to pay for your life in Australia.

This connects to evidence that you can get the heck out of Australia, which means either evidence of funds OOOR a ticket out.

You need another copy of your passport.

You need a picture of yourself, one of those little ones for your passport, for your brand new Visa. Get like four of them. 

You need a Police Certificate next which is basically a background check. Yay! Go to your local police station to get one of these OR go to the FBI page. They can get you a copy for a fee. This is US only, idk about other countries. Go to the government. Google.

For New Zealand you need, which right now is the vain of my existence, a fucking Health Certificate which is a Chest X-ray if you are staying for longer than a year. You CANNOT go to any doctor, you have to go to a special doctor which they have a list of. No matter how far. they are. you have. to go. So I’m flying by myself to get this on Wednesday.

Once you have all of this, shove it all into PDF files, and then apply online. Or by paper, Online is faster. 

AGAIN. THIS IS FOR NEW ZEALAND and a NZ Student Visa.

I do not know how it is for Australia. It might be WAY different. You have to check, okay? ;u; I know it sounds really scary and like a lot of work, and honestly it is. But it is so worth it. I’ve cried my eyes out over it but what drives me and what pushes me to continue is that it is to make myself happy. It is something I am looking forward to with all my heart and no matter what I have to do, I’ll get there.
