Mikuni watched withfascination as Jeje ran around the kitchen preparing all sorts ofpumpkin-flavored baked goods; he’d spent all afternoon and most of the eveningworking them, and even now he saw no indication that Jeje might be finishingsoon. How Jeje had gotten ahold of so many pumpkins in the first place wasbeyond him, but their apartment would inevitably smell of pumpkin spice for atleast the next two days, and Mikuni wasn’t one to question a good thing.
Jeje was so focused onwhat he was doing that Mikuni was sure Jeje hadn’t noticed when he’d stolen apan of pumpkin bars from the ever-growing pile of sweets Jeje was building onthe far counter, and started to snack on them like popcorn as he continued towatch with amusement.
While Jeje clearly knewwhat he was doing, his movements were frazzled and rushed as he ran from onecounter to the other, the top bags he usually wore had long since fallen off,and if it wasn’t for Mikuni, who had been kind enough to pick the bags up andplace them on the dining table next to him, they very well might have gottentrampled.
The bag that stillcovered Jeje’s face became more and more worn as he moved about; Mikuni nearlyspit out a mouthful of food when Jeje nonchalantly moved the bag up to the topof his head, not only enabling himself to see what he was doing, but alsoallowing Mikuni a rare outside-of-the-bedroom view of Jeje’s entire face. Withsuch a precarious position, it wasn’t long before the mask fell off, and beganto slowly drift to the floor.
At this point, it wasalmost a surprise to see Jeje notice this; his eyes widened in shock as hewatched the mask’s gradual descent. Mikuni didn’t think twice before jumpingfrom his spot and moving forward towards Jeje. In that moment, he could readevery thought that ran through Jeje’s mind: he could save the bag from fallingto the tiled floor that was now covered with flour and other ingredients Jejehadn’t bothered to clean up yet, but in doing so, he’d lose the tray of cookieshe had been carrying across the kitchen.
The thought that Jejecould have obviously managed to do both with this vampiric speed did not skipMikuni’s mind, but with how preoccupied Jeje had been with this baking, hesupposed Jeje’s predicament was forgivable.
Mikuni managed to snatchup the paper bag just before it hit the ground. A playful grin spread acrosshis face as he watched the tension slowly drain away from Jeje’s face.
“Honestly Jeje, whatwould you do without me?” he asked in voice that managed to sound bothexasperated and teasing at the same time.
Jeje didn’t respond atfirst. He finished his short trek to the opposite counter, where he placed hisfresh batch of cookies on a free cooling rack before padding back over toMikuni, and attempted to take his mask back.
Jeje’s fingertips justbarely grazed the paper before Mikuni pulled his arm back, effectively pullingthe bag out of Jeje’s reach.
“Keep it off,” Mikunisaid, glancing back the table. Jeje’s gaze followed his, and the slightest ofblushes began to paint his pale cheeks when he saw that Mikuni had alreadysaved his other two bags.
Mikuni didn’t even try tostop himself from chuckling as he closed the gap between Jeje and himself, reaching out to caress Jeje’s cheek with his free hand. “Don’t be embarrassed,it’s only me,” he spoke softly before leaning in further to place tender kisson Jeje’s lips.
“I’ll keep them safe foryou,” he promised after pulling away.
An obvious look ofskepticism danced through Jeje’s eyes, but still he said nothing. A momentpassed before he seemed to let go of any doubts he may have had.
“Just until I finish up,”Jeje nodded in agreement.
Mikuni didn’t get thechance to revel in his small victory before Jeje was already turning back tothe counter and retrieving a small bowl and spatula, and handing them both toMikuni upon his return. Mikuni immediately recognized the distinct scent ofcream cheese frosting.
“Those,” Jeje said, pointing over to the half-eaten pan of pumpkin bars Mikuni taken earlier, “willtaste better if you frost them first.”
Mikuni snickered as he carriedthe bowl, spatula, and mask back to the table. “You know Jeje,” his voice wascasual as he took a dollop of frosting with the spatula, and proceeded to lickthe utensil clean in a manner that was only a little suggestive, “I like mypumpkin bars and my servamp’s face the same way,” he paused for a second beforeadding, “completely uncovered.”
The light color that hadcovered Jeje’s cheeks moments before was nothing compared to the bright redblush that moved across Jeje’s face and to the tips of his ears. While Mikunihad meant what he’d said, he was also being a bit provocative with his words, the reference clearly did not slip his sweet, and at times naive, Jeje.
“Make another commentlike that, and I won’t be sharing any of this,” Jeje grumbled before turninghis back to Mikuni in favor tending to whatever he’d placed in the oven.
Mikunilaughed, he knew an empty threat when he saw one. Even so, he’d gotten thereaction he’d wanted from Jeje, so he figured he could give his poor servamp abreak, at least for now.
