i think people have been taking the last scene of ch4 REALLY far in either direction when its way more likely to be somewhere in the middle
like ive been seeing people saying they think that this is literally the first time toriel has had anything to drink in Years, that shes not even drunk in that scene / that shes only tipsy, and that other than this scene there is 100% nothing at all to indicate she is not a completely perfect saint of a mother.
and ive seen people acting like this means toriel is getting completely drunk off her ass every single night and is the worst mother on the planet. i literally saw someone say she was worse than UT asgore for this. like that this was 'killing 6 children' levels bad.
personally i Do think she has an alcohol problem. i think kris's reaction doesnt seem very surprised + UT alarm clock dialogue previously implied it was something she struggled with in UT and so it makes sense that carries over to DR* . but, like, that doesnt automatically make her The Worst Parent To Ever Exist And Possibly The Literal Devil. shes Clearly trying. she Does love kris she Does want whats best for them shes doing her best. and she is failing them in certain aspects for sure but i think its disingenuous to act like thats because she doesnt care or because shes a wholly bad parent.
i also think its important to note that toriel Kind Of Has A Lot Going On Right Now. like, the divorce seems like it was pretty recent at least to me and asgore is kind of harassing her about getting back together**. i think shes probably less focused on kris and how theyre doing than she would be under better circumstances.
*i also think that its possible queens behavior w/ kris in ch2 was intended to parallel it but the more chapters we have the more it seems queen is Specifically reflecting carol and not everyone elses parents so im less sure about this.
**not that asgore is evil either. but like. he is literally popping out of bushes and shit to try to give her flowers when she is Clearly Not Interested and things like this have been going on for A While if the floral scent already existing before we give her the flowers in ch1 is any indicator.
