🕹 signal // noise 001: centrepiece
After 40 years in one home, this Dual CS 505-1 has a new one. The original owner was hesitant to part with it—not because of value, but because of meaning. This wasn’t just a machine. It was time made tactile.
When I explained that I wasn’t chasing perfection or resale—what I was after was story, character, documentation—and that it would become part of a wider sound art project, he agreed to ship it. “as it looks like it’s going to good use,” he said. “I’ll have a look at what I can do.”
Now it sits at the heart of the signal // noise armoury. Still pristine in function, etched with age in form. Original paperwork, type and linework intact. Dials still smooth. The pitch slider clicks with quiet resolve. It’s an analogue relic reborn as digital source.
Perfect fodder for Process Zine too—pages to scan, glitch, fax, archive. Evidence of care. Of design. Of fidelity.
This isn’t nostalgia. It’s continuity. It’s signal.
