I forgot just how deeply cursed Alex Irvine's novelization of Pacific Rim is until I went skimming through the book looking for material that might have been sourced from Newt and Hermann's original character bios.

Among many, many other cursed things, the book makes Newt a big fan of laissez-faire capitalism, and he likes it when it gets involved with public programs: Newt was almost as surprised. The entire Pan-Pacific Defense initiative was funded by a black marketeer who recouped his investment by selling parts of the kaiju whose killing he had financed. And some of the parts were purchased by Kaiju Science! Newt probably had tissue and organs on his lab tables that came from this Hannibal Chau person.

Now that was a public-private partnership, Newt thought admiringly. Oh, and remember in the movie, where Newt shoves Hercules Hansen aside and yells, "Move, you fascist!"? Yeah. Not here. Nope. Alex Irvine makes Newt a good little respecter of military guys:

Newt and Gottlieb stormed into the LOCCENT disheveled, out of breath, and stinking like kaiju guts.

“It’s not going to work! It’s not going to work!” Newt shouted.

Herc held up both hands and the two scientists skidded to a halt in front of him.

Oh, and Raleigh Becket really likes it when strict roles and separation of classes: Herc and Chuck Hansen sat together at the edge of the maintenance bay overseeing the work but staying out of the way of their crews. Raleigh knew Herc a bit from his first tour, but had only seen Chuck on TV. They were cool and professional. Techs did the maintenance. Pilots did the piloting. Didn’t do anyone any good to get those roles confused.

The whole book is just... like this; it exudes a constant low-grade miasma of super fucked up shit.

Horse-In-A-Bookcase Truthers- People who remember watching the show “Horse in a bookcase” and believe it is real (This is NOT real. This is NOT a government coverup for Marlin Jackyl’s disappearance).

Letter Avoidants/Preferants- People who will avoid one or more letters at all costs due to fear or hatred of the letter and not for some aesthetic purpose or challenge. Same thing but they will go out of their way to use one or more letters.

Outdatedphiliacs- People who see someone in one of those weird Facebook specific t-shirts and find it attractive/sexy. (Ex: Someone is wearing a “Don’t underestimate a man born in JUNE with BLUE EYES because he is ten seconds from releasing the beast inside at ALL TIMES!” And a Outdatedphiliac is like “Shit that’s kind of hot.”

Phantomphiliacs- People who wanna bang ghosts. I believe that requires no further explanation.

Plasticenes- People who want their body parts turned to plastic. Not object TG. Just people who saw the second episode of R.L. Stine’s Haunting Hour and got oddly aroused during the transformation scene.

Pokétholics- People who believe in the Pokémon mythology. Arceus created the universe, Palkia rules space, Dialga rules time, etc. Why are there no Pokémon? I don’t know! I’m not Pokétholic.

TransAnimeMorphia- People who will go to horrific extents to change their body to match anime character body proportions. Eye enlargement, height surgery, body proportion changing. They are not transgender, they just want to resemble their favorite characters and grow closer to them through appearance.

Trypophiliacs- People who saw Trypophobia images in 2015 and thought “Damn. That’s kinda hot.”

WHYPhilia- People who want to have sex with characters that are not from their generation of media and are not considered conventionally attractive. They have to seem at least mostly visually unappealing and appeal to a far older generation of people’s media. (Ex: Snow Meiser/Heat Meiser from Rankin Bass Christmas Specials)
