Summary: After the apocalypse, Dean's living with Lisa and earning his keep by cooking dinner. Cas likes that Dean can cook. Dean likes Cas's company. But they could use a little alone time, and Dean has a lot to learn about what the rest of his life really means.

Any post-canon fic that imagines a happy, domestic ending for Dean and Cas is a win in my books, and this one just does it so well. It’s about periods of adjustment, figuring out your priorities, and how to keep living after the world doesn’t end the way you thought it would. It’s strange in some ways to go back to a fic that imagines the series ending after S5 and not taking into consideration anything that has happened since, but it’s so ultimately satisfying that you don’t necessarily find yourself missing those later canon moments.

There’s so much to love here: Lisa and Ben as a positive force in Dean’s life even if they aren’t the source of his ultimate happiness, a happy and healthy Sam pursuing his own path in life, and above all else, the quiet, steady build of the relationship between Dean and Cas. It’s refreshing to read a Castiel who knows what he wants, but isn’t sure he’s allowed to ask for it-- and a Dean who doesn’t freak out when he realizes what he wants in return. Plus, there’s a whole lot of cooking, kitchen banter, and eventually, kitchen sex, all of it presented as a really great exploration of Dean’s character. Oh, blissful domesticity. There are parts that will tug at your heartstrings and parts that will make you laugh out loud, and the ending promises more good things ahead for Team Free Will.
