Stephen Pays Tribute To D-Day On Its 75th Anniversary
We still need letters
We will accept nothing less than full victory! Good luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking. —Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, Supreme Allied Commander, 6 June 1944.
Marking the 75th anniversary of D-Day with these drawings of Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin. Originally intended to post this triptych of "The Big Three" for the anniversary of the Yalta Conference in February, but didn't have them finished in time. While these drawings focus only on big players, I'd like to express my deepest appreciation for everyone in every country who took part in the fight against Fascism in whatever capicity as we reflect on this historic occasion!
HMS Warspite fires one of the first salvos from sea on D-Day. This picture was taken at 0500 hours. By 0520 many of the capital ships in the channel were bombarding the shore with a variety of 6-, 8-, 14-, 15- and 16-inch guns. In the following 48 hours, Warspite alone would fire more than 300 rounds on enemy positions
Yeah, I know it's in German but it was (sadly) so true I still had to post it.
It's about the paradox that (too many of) the people (politicians) remembering the D-day in London have a mindset that would've let Hitler win 75 years ago and that it's a shame (and somewhat crime) that they are standing at the graves of the brave people that stopped Hitler. Like Trump with his new nationalism and anti-europe-mindset or Theresa May and Steve Bannon who are so against the European Union tho this and other international institutions, such as the United Nations, World Trade Organization, NATO, etc. All of this so the horrors of the Second World War and the Nazi-Regime could never happen again...
photos silencieuses, oeil bruyant
Pipers were banned from the front line during WWII due to the high number of casualties during WWI. But Lord Lovat, who traditionally always
As it’s the 75th anniversary of D-Day, an amazing true story of a piper on the beaches in Normandy
Today we recognise the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Taking place on 6 June 1944, this invasion of Normandy was one of the most important turning points of World War II. It was the largest amphibious (land and water) invasion in history. On the early hours of the day, more than 156,000 Allied ground troops stormed the beaches and faced approximately 50,000 German troops. This invasion was part of the beginning of the end of Germany and Hitler’s reign. Thousands of men had lost their lives during this battle; defending their country and people they loved. We must take a moment to recognise not only the men who fought in this, but those who are still serving and have served. ❤️
