Less Tiki Culture! I understand how tiki culture is something we can't erase and is a big part of Disney's creations but I'm tired of them pushing it so much.

Oh, forgot to talk about Frozen 3. The movie being about Anna and Kristoff’s wedding feels like a natural continuation of the story. But did we really need to give Olaf a love interest? Anyways, we’ll see how this one goes. It is interesting that Frozen 4 is being developed alongside Frozen 3, so maybe we’ll get a cliffhanger at the end of 3?

Alright, so taking a look at the other announcements at D23:

1) The Incredibles 3: Not gonna lie, this sounds like commentary on how superhero comics tend to go through “eras”. Next gen heroes Dash and Violet are taking over, but Bob and Helen feel out of place among the new generation of heroes. Since the issue seems to be with some supers not being good people, I’m wondering if the movie will cover anti-heroes. So since the Parr family are obviously based on the Fantastic Four, it sounds like they are being pitted against Pixar’s versions of Red Hood/Punisher/Daredevil.

Not saying that Incredibles 3 will be rated R, but my guess is the antihero archetype will be the focus of that movie. (EDIT: Alternative route, maybe this will be a movie based on how superhero comics can quickly spiral into excess? Like how superhero comics started off wholesome and idealistic, and then it spiraled into power-scaling, constant major events, and team after team after team. Maybe this is Brad Bird trying to make his version of “The Boys”)

2) Zootopia 3: Inevitable, especially with the birds teaser in the previous movie. No other comment here.

3) Coco 2: Okay, not gonna lie, Pixar might be tripping here. Coco was a good movie, but it also felt very conclusive. And the released plot details aren’t very promising. Disney basically said, “Somehow, Ernesto de la Cruz returned”. Not saying Coco 2 is doomed, but I’m hoping Pixar actually has something interesting to say here and not just rehashing elements of the 2017 movie.

4) Kingdom Hearts IV: I’ll admit, making fun of Kingdom Hearts lore is one of my favorite things to do lol. I did my best to understand this franchise (I even listened to Barry Kramer’s 7-hour stream trying to understand KH’s lore), so I want to preface that I’m not a total hater. I just think the lore is dumb in a fun way. That being said, it is so incredibly funny to me that this special unique world of Quadratum is literally just Tokyo. So what, did Square Enix and Disney not get the clearance to say Tokyo in their game? Also, it is so funny that after multiple games of the characters traveling from Disney worlds to Final Fantasy rejected worlds, KH4 just sends Sora and friends to fucking Tokyo. Kingdom Hearts is in their Persona 5 era, I see.

5) Live-action Tangled: Disney is still doing this live-action shit, huh? Well, I will remain neutral for now. So far, cast and crew is a mixed bag. It’s great that the director is Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman). It’s bad that the screenwriter is Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (2025 I Know What You Did Last Summer). It is kinda funny that Rapunzel is being played by Teagan Croft aka Raven from the dark and gritty Titans live action series. I don’t know who Milo Mannheim is so no comment. As for Kathryn Hahn, that’s 10/10 casting for Mother Gothel. Disney basically just went, “Kathryn, you wanna play another singing witch?” Speaking of live actions…

6) Live action Lilo and Stich 2: Oh boy, here we go again. Well, hopefully, the second installment turns out better than the first one?

Not getting too far into this, but I did watch the part of the D23 kh panel where Haley and David re-read the post Xemnas fight + Dark Margin scene, and I have a few thoughts about it

First of all, it doesn't surprise me that Sora and Riku's eng vas have never voiced their characters in the same room before. As I understand it, this is actually most commonly what happens with the english vas who dub square enix games. This is due to the fact that the recording of Final Fantasy XVI's english lines was an outlier. As they were the first to record their lines (when usually jp recording is first), they were able to work with the localization/writing/scripting people more directly and sort of define as a team the emotions to convey through the characters' lines and voices. Them having major vas work in the same room from time to time really helped with the camraderie and making certain close relationships more believable. Most square enix games are not recorded in english first, so most do not get this treatment.

Second of all, the differences in Haley and David's performances are interesting to me. David very recently has been playing through the kingdom hearts games, so I feel his line reads (down to the inflections) more closely match the original kingdom hearts 2 scene (listen, I have re-watched that scene countless times. It also did not escape my notice that he was so into voicing the "we'll be the darkness" line with the same cadence that he spoke over the narrator). Because of this, it really stands out in those few moments where David's inflections or overall line reads are different. It feels more like an intentional choice, now that he has more context for the scene and his own take on it. As for Haley, he read quite a lot of Sora's scenes differently than the original game. However, I don't point this out as a criticism. Rather, I believe this is also more or less intentional on his part. His re-read of Sora's lines to me contain more emotional depth, and create a more somber scene. He paints a Sora who very well (in the sound of his voice) has his own fair share of problems and is affected by all this (this being the events of the game). I feel like this reading is a reading that could only have come about with the fact that the vas are working off of each other, as well as with having more context for the in game scene and how the characters might be feeling. (Although, in a way, I also felt like Haley's performance is a bit more casual—as if he's trying to give it his read based upon seeing the whole script and having more of that context, not beholding himself to exactly voicing it the same way he did 21 years ago. More like a sight reading if you will.)

I am but a simple person, so of course the fact that we got Sora and Riku's vas reading aloud one of the quintessential Soriku scenes from the last couple decades is making me feel some kind of way. A real big "it could mean nothing, but–" moment. ❤️💙
