“Okay,” Daichi says, leaning back against Bokuto’s chest, “Next question.”
Bokuto heaves a full-body sigh, like they’ve been sitting on the living room floor trying to study this chapter for more than ten consecutive minutes. “Can’t we do a different chapter or something? Or take a break?"
“We just took a break," Daichi points out, tapping the hickey blooming to bright life on the side of his neck. “Remember? You don't get another one until you finish this chapter."
“But Daichi," Bokuto protests, tone just this side of whiny. He noses at that hickey, mouths at it, makes Daichi hum low in his throat. “Can't we take another one, come on--"
“Okay, I got—oh, come on. You can't keep your hands off each other for five minutes?"
Daichi’s cheeks go pink. He and Bokuto both jerk their heads up at the same time to look at Kuroo, who shakes his head before coming to wriggle into the space between Bokuto’s back and the couch. He plunks one of the water bottles he’d gone to get down on the floor next to Daichi, and jabs Bokuto with the other one before handing it over.
Daichi, at least, has the decency to push Bokuto’s face away from his neck. “Sorry.”
“I'm not," Bokuto puts in. When Daichi turns to scold him, Bokuto is grinning, unrepentant, as he leans back and presses a kiss to Kuroo’s jaw.
Kuroo clicks his tongue, pinches at Bokuto’s side. "Don't leave me out of the fun, at least."
“It's always more fun when you're--"
“There will be no fun," Daichi interrupts, leveling them both with a no-nonsense look, "until Bokuto's done studying."
Two voices, plaintive and irritating in their unity: “But Daichi--"
“No," Daichi says, firm, and his boyfriends wilt. He rolls his eyes at them both before turning back to the textbook sitting in his lap. “Let's focus. What's the answer to number 12?"
Bokuto hums into the crook of Daichi’s neck. "Uh. B?"
According to Bokuto, the ribosome is the powerhouse of the cell. Daichi sighs. “Are you even trying?"
“Kind of," Bokuto admits. He slips his hands under daichi’s t-shirt, presses his palms flat to Daichi’s belly, bends his head to kiss at Daichi's neck again. "Mostly just thinking about kissing you, though."
Warmth sparks under Daichi’s skin despite his resolve. e lets his head fall back against Bokuto’s shoulder and reaches back, meaning to work his fingers into Bokuto’s hair and—though not without a good measure of reluctance—pull him away.
Before he can accomplish much of anything, though, Kuroo catches his wrist and tugs it back further, presses a kiss to his palm. “You two," he murmurs against Daichi's skin, "are terrible study partners. I expected more from you, Daichi."
Daichi’s ears go hot again; though most of him is voting in favor of giving in to Bokuto’s hands and mouth, the more rational part of his brain casts its lot for productivity. Responsibility makes Daichi untangle himself from Bokuto’s grip and turn around, tucking his legs underneath himself, trying to ignore the way his cock nudges half-hard at the front of his shorts. He gives a smirking Kuroo his best glare and says, “Shut up.”
Without Daichi there to tease, Bokuto flops back against Kuroo’s chest with something like a pout forming on his lips. “It’s not like we were studying anyway,” he grumbles, crossing his arms over his chest.
Kuroo grins and says, "I've got an idea."
That phrase in that tone of voice almost never means anything good. Daichi is understandably wary when he says, “What is it?”
“We use a reward system. For each question you get right, you'll get one kiss. When you finish the chapter--" Kuroo shrugs, presses the sharpness of his smile into Bokuto's neck "--you'll get something better. How about it?"
Bokuto twists around to give Kuroo a scrutinizing look. “What's the catch?"
“No catch," Kuroo says, tone and expression as innocent as they can be.
“If you don’t get at least half of them right, you’re not getting anything from me.” Kuroo waves his hand in concession to Daichi’s terms, but Bokuto’s frown deepens. Daichi sighs and adds, “That’s fifty percent. It's only a little higher than your average for all of the other chapters; you can do that, right?"
Bokuto is looking at Daichi, so he doesn't see the signature shit-stirring grin that settles on Kuroo's lips when he says, "I could probably do that, and I haven't taken biology in years."
There it is. Bokuto whirls around, bristling, and snaps, "I can definitely answer more questions than you!"
"So prove it."
"Just you watch," Bokuto snarls, and jabs a finger at the textbook on the floor. "Quiz me!"
Daichi trades Kuroo a begrudgingly impressed look for a smug one, shrugs, and flips the page.
--
After a solid forty minutes of quizzing, Kuroo and Bokuto are sitting on their heels, wide-eyed, watching as Daichi tallies up Bokuto’s final score.
“Okay,” Daichi says. He puts the numbers into the calculator one more time—just to be sure—and then schools his face into his best ‘I’m disappointed in you’ frown. It’s unnecessary, but worth it to see the way both Kuroo and Bokuto’s faces fall in unison. “You got fifty-nine percent of the questions right.”
“Damnit! I could have sworn I knew most of—wait.” Bokuto stops clutching his hair in agony long enough to level Daichi with a very much confused look. “Fifty-nine percent?”
Daichi snaps the textbook shut and pushes it aside, rocking forward onto his hands and knees. “Yes.”
“That’s more than fifty percent, right?” Bokuto asks, slow, like his brain is still warming up to the idea of success. Daichi makes himself comfortable between the splay of Bokuto’s legs and watches him try to catch up, grinning. “I didn’t screw up?”
“Nope.”
“Then why did you look so—so disappointed?”
“Because it’s easy to mess with you,” says Kuroo, who’s risen up on his knees to press a kiss behind Bokuto’s ear. “And because you’re cute when you’re confused.”
Bokuto’s mouth works for a solid three seconds before he gives in to Kuroo’s mouth on his neck and lets Daichi tug his shirt over his head. “You’re both terrible,” he tells them, though he’s grinning as they tip him backwards. “The worst.”
“Ooh, say it again,” Kuroo growls, adding an eyebrow wiggle lewd enough to make Daichi laugh against Bokuto’s throat.
“You’re the worst. Especially you.” Bokuto leans up, lands a sloppy kiss right on the tip of Kuroo’s nose, and hooks his fingers into the collars of Kuroo’s and Daichi’s shirts before he flops back down. “Now get down here. I’m pretty sure I earned that study break.”
