A few days ago, a friend told me that happiness is not everything. I think he’s right. Happiness is good, but it doesn’t change a person the way hurt does. It does not challenge a person the way pain will. We grow—my goodness, do we grow—from the bad stuff. So the reality is this: The dark clouds are here to stay, not forever, but for now. But the silver lining? Well, it’s this: There is a part of us that can only be found in sadness, in anger, in despair, in defeat. And that part is precious. It is the place where courage is built. And courage, my dear, is worth it. Let me tell you what I know to be true: You deserve happiness. You really do. But more than anything, you deserve wholeness. And today, this dark cloudy I’ve-lost-my-joy day, is a part of being whole. I’m sorry that things are difficult. I hope that you can be brutally honest about how you feel right now, even if the only person you admit it to is yourself. Happiness is not the ultimate goal. It is not everything, but it is a part of everything. Even now, though you do not feel it, you are learning to be brave.
