Gaming time!
What you’re looking at here are screenshots of the Nintendo Switch port of Onion Game’s Dandy Dungeon.
I thoroughly loved the company’s Black Bird, released for Switch and PC last year, so I was champing at the bit to play this retooled version of Dandy Dungeon, too.
Now that I’ve played it--and for more than 22 hours!--I thought I’d share some impressions of the experience.

Dandy Dungeon
The mobile game market is often considered a cesspool full of allegedly free games plagued with ads and microtransactions, rip-offs of clones of ancient titles and other useless stuff, but every now and then a genuinely interesting game like Dandy Dungeon comes out. It also is another example of the resurgence of the Japanese gaming industry, which has fallen out of favor with the gamers between the 2000s and 2010s, but is slowly making a comeback. Labeled “The World’s First RPG (Romance Programming Game)”, Dandy Dungeon is the brainchild of Yoshiro Kimura, the weird mind behind games like Chulip or Little King’s Story. Smartphones may not seem the ideal home for Kimura’s usual elaborate universes, but he still managed to inject his trademark zaniness into this game.

Yoshiro Kimura’s Dandy Dungeon is out on iOS and Android ⊟
Known in Japan as Brave Yamada-kun, this is the first release from Onion Games, the company started by Little King’s Story creator Yoshiro Kimura.
Dandy Dungeon is a game-within-a-game. Yamada-kun is a 36-year-old programmer who falls in love with his 18-year-old neighbor (this part doesn’t sound great!) and puts her in his RPG as a princess as, like, a passive expression of affection I guess? Anyway, you play the RPG, tracing lines across dungeons to guide the hero from start to exit. This part looks fun!
The translation is by Videoball creator-slash-critic-slash-probably-literally-anything-else-I-can-name Tim Rogers. Dandy Dungeon is out on iOS and Android, but doesn’t seem to be live in the US yet. Good news for Canada though!
