"METROPOLIS—TOKYO 2049"
by Dan Kitchener, aka DANK
When Dan Kitchener's formal art education didn't click he says he found himself creating underground comics and painting "crazy stuff on walls." After a somewhat convoluted career path his exhibitions and murals have garnered a rapidly growing fan base. Kitchener's compositions create beauty in otherwise gritty urban themes enhanced by his mastery of light and shadow. This 2017 mural at the Red Cinema in Greensboro, North Carolina—his largest work at that point—was created completely freehand with no projection, grid, or stencils and incorporates two portraits: Cindi Li and Ayumi LaNoire (in detail above).
