David Heo's "MYTHOS."
Currently on view at Hashimoto Contemporary in New York City is artist David Heo's solo exhibition, "MYTHOS."
In "Mythos"MYTHOS," Heo demonstrates his unique approach to mixed media, recurring symbols, and personal themes by drawing on familiar figures from 1990s popular culture. He reinterprets their influence by placing them in the context of classical South Korean vessels, reflecting his bi-cultural upbringing. Heo uses pop culture as an entry point to explore broader topics, such as power dynamics and insidious rivalries between marginalized groups.
Heo's art highlights the learned biases behind our perceptions of protagonism and antagonism, as well as the roles of "good" and "evil." His use of color and imagery directs the narrative, reflecting the meanings we associate with these binaries. For instance, in "Priiiiiime," mixed media layers showcase figures in contrasting colors, highlighting power dynamics. Heo ultimately questions the assignment of "hero" and "villain" roles and who controls the narrative when context is removed.
