Kasesada and I watch over Toshizo as he does his favorite hobbies is writing poetry. Hijikata in his habitat ❤ INSPIRATION
Decided to switch up the fan art a bit and throw in some characters from other shows I really enjoy. Today Hijikata Toshiro from Gintama!
Begin As You Mean To Go On
Edo: About a Year before 'Gintama' begins.
Gintoki has yet to meet Shinpachi and Kagura. The Shinsengumi have never heard of Gintoki. Katsura is somewhere in Edo, causing a ruckus as a Joui terrorist, and Takasugi is based in Kyoto.
If Takasugi had to choose between going to Edo or Hell, there was no doubt he'd choose the latter. But on this occasion, he was visiting Edo.
There hadn't been any real choice about it. Bansai, who usually handled any Edo business, was sick in bed with some highly contagious Amanto virus which he'd picked up from an assassination target. The assassination had gone off without a hitch, but eight hours later, the hitokiri had been in bed coughing his guts out, his face covered with red dots. Or so Takasugi had heard. He wasn't about to pay a sick call to observe the symptoms for himself.
Even if Edo had been more to his tastes, he'd have preferred not to visit. Edo was Zura's territory, and Zura had far too many ears and eyes on the ground for Takasugi's comfort. If he stayed here much more than a day,Zura would come along and ask him what was going on?
Zura had certainly made a name for himself in this city. There were posters bearing his face everywhere. Idiot. What was the point of wearing one of these monks' hats if you exposed your face to cameras? There were no posters of Takasugi's face anywhere in the country. In Kyoto, there'd been a few handbills describing him, but they'd been taken down quickly by Joui sympathizers. Kyoto was a much more friendly city in so many ways.
His appointment with the smuggler he'd come to meet had been moved to tomorrow morning, so he had some time to kill. Zura's wanted posters had piqued his curiosity. The reward for Zura's capture had been raised again, and this time, the contact information was different than the last time he'd been in Edo. Anyone with information on Zura's activities was requested to contact not the regular Edo police, but a special anti-terrorist unit, the Shinsengumi.
Takasugi had heard of the Shinsengumi before. They were the rising stars of the Bakufu: a band of country samurai who'd cracked down on Joui activity in Edo with a lot of success. It was about time he inspected this threat himself, he decided.
A few minutes later he was in a phonebooth, making a call to the Shinsengumi. He had some information about Katsura Kotarou, he explained to the man who answered the phone: No, he wasn't going to talk on the phone or come in to Shinsengumi Headquarters. If the Shinsengumi wanted his information, they'd send an officer out to meet with him in a neutral place.
He named a fairly respectable drinking establishment in Kabukichou. He'd be waiting for a Shinsengumi representative there around seven o'clock. He described what he'd be wearing so he could be identified, but left out the detail of his bandaged eye, in case that twigged someone's memory.
"Tell your commanders that I know Katsura from a long time back," he added. "Before he ever came to Edo." That detail ought to fetch an important officer.
He finished the call, then began to prepare himself for the evening ahead. At worst the Shinsengumi would send a force to try to take him into custody. He could easily escape that. At best they'd actually send an officer to talk with him. It was a discussion he was looking forward to.

"Oi, tax robber, I am surprised to see you here, yes? What are you doing, uh-huh?" Kagura asked upon noticing the black haired man.
