So for the first time, I participated in an annual art exhibition hosted by a group of illustrators here in Iceland. I had seen some of their previous exhibitions, which always has an interesting theme that each artist then interprets individually. So why not, I thought, and grabbed a spot when they called for entries in January. It is part of a wide-spread design and architecture festival, Design March, held for several days in March each year.
This year’s theme was aliens. I admit, I found the theme really difficult. Probably because my main interest, drawing-wise, are humans! So my first instinct was to find something that could link me back to planet Earth. I cycled back and forth endlessly but finally decided to play with this popular (conspiracy) theory about ancient aliens--which is, that Earth’s ancient civilizations were visited by extraterrestrials.
I’m a long time Egyptophile, and love all things ancient and mythological really, so it was fun to research. I wish I had landed the final concept somewhat earlier as I only started working on it the week before the dead-line, so there’s plenty of things I’d love to change now, of course! Maybe I’ll revisit it sometimes.
Also--I was really unsure whether to colour this or not! I’m a big fan of BW ink style (like my Mr. Robot series) and I’m still not sold that the colour was a better choice. So I’m leaving both the coloured (final and printed) version along with the BW. And there’s also a snapshot from the poster itself at the exhibition!
