                 the rest in their symphony had lasted four beats too long. 

                 odd // that’s the only way to describe the sudden, hollow feeling in his chest. the way his heart no longer skipped measures & danced eight notes around him. HIS HEART WAS A CARCASS. 

                  killed by distance ------- killed by separation ------- killed by too much time spent apart where thoughts & thoughts & ideas of COMPATIBILITY & FUNCTIONALITY swirled through his mind. they invaded his bloodstream like poison ------ right to HIS CARCASS. 

                  they were having more fights. 

                  more fights than conversations. 

                  more conversations than kisses. 

                  less kisses than love -------------

                  & eve then, what did kaname know about LOVE ? such an emotion was foreign to the musician. who was, to say, that he was not simply IN LOVE with the idea of maxie ? of someone so callous & broken & inexplicably intertwined to music as he was --------------- who’s to say he didn’t fall IN LOVE with the idea of that ? & even then, was that l o v e ? or was that desire bred from necessity to be near him ?

                   kaname hated the uncertainty. he hated how ----- SHALLOW & FRAGILE & BROKEN their relationship had become. he hated how they couldn’t relate anymore without terse silence & awkward pauses weaved into their conversations.  he hated that their wavelength was disturbed. he hated that it was his fault they were falling through fissures created by his inability to properly love someone the way they were meant to be loved. 

                   the cracks were bound to form. KANAME’S NEW JOB kept him away from home longer than he wanted to admit. he sucked keeping in constant communication with people. he kept in touch with haru constantly. sachi he kept in communication with it often. but maxie ----- maxie he failed to reconnect every time. 

                   he didn’t know how to fix them. 

                   but he did know how to break things ------------ 

                  kan had one day off before he had to back to work on his latest album. he immediately dialed maxie once he got home. his fingers felt like lead as he scrolled through his phone & picked max’s name out of all the contacts. he dialed the number & waited. 

                  ‘ hey. ’ he said once the line connected. ‘ where are you right now ? ’
