And once again to @dgmsecretsanta2k17 for organizing this event!!)
Summary: The soft things they do when (they think) no one’s watching (and the ones they actually do when no one can see).
i.-
The first time they noticed had been mere coincidence.
More like mere luck.
The four of them were making their way to work after having stopped for coffee, the wind slowly picking up regardless of how early it was. Most shops not offering either warm beverages or food were still closed and through the streets only those like them with a job to go to walked by.
Despite the absence of people so early in the morning the city was alive, the many Christmas lights and decorations having taken life hours ago. Even closed shops and empty alleyways seemed to cheer up with the strings of colorful lights and the big Santa models waving to no one in particular.
In the midst of such a calm morning Lavis’ curses contrasted quite hugely. Lena watched bemused from a few steps behind him how he kept glaring at the sky while murmuring something that sounded very much like ‘it’s not gonna be cold my ass’ and ‘Mr Winter can go fuck himself’ all while he [futilely] tried to burrow deeper into his scarf as the grip on his coffee cup unconsciously increased.
Lena couldn’t blame him though, she was in the same situation after all, the cup she was holding barely giving her any kind of significant heat, and judging by the grumbles and groans coming from behind her Allen and Kanda weren’t doing much better.
They reached a corner and stopped to wait for the walking sign to turn back on, the soft buttery smell coming from the bakery by their side reminding them of the crappy breakfast they had had and making them feel like ditching work for the day. Lena allowed herself to take a look at the arrangement of pastries displayed by the window, something the other three didn’t even think about doing. She instantly recognized Allen’s favorite butter cookies, the same ones he had been buying recently, keeping the location of the bakery a secret.
“Hey Allen! Aren’t these those cookies you really li-” her words died on her tongue the moment she turned around, the previous smile on her face replaced by a perfect 'o’.
It’s not that she wasn’t used to Allen and Kanda’s relationship, everyone they knew and cared for completely supported them, it hadn’t even been such a surprise when the two had finally made it official (they weren’t even trying hard enough to hide it jeez). They shared an apartment, worked together with Lavi and Lena and were completely happy, so everyone else was happy for them as well.
This, however. Lena wasn’t used to this. None of them were probably, given they didn’t look much at the couple (likely because those who stared at them for more than five seconds without a reasonable reason would receive a 'Kanda Glare’. No one liked to receive those).
Both Kanda and Allen had stopped a few steps behind facing each other, and no it wasn’t this what had made her stop talking, it was what they were doing. Kanda was fixing Allen’s scarf. His knees were slightly bent as for to properly arrange the long garment, he was grumbling and groaning pretty much the way Lavi had been doing moments ago, except his words were more like 'can’t even wear a scarf properly’ and 'if you even dare getting sick…’ though they held no real harm.
Kanda’s brows were furrowed in concentration, long fingers worked quickly yet carefully trying to arrange the long fluffy thing properly and Allen was just standing there with the softest sheepish smile, eyes warm never straying from Kanda’s face.
And when Kanda finally decided the new arrangement was proper with a satisfied smile, before he could move, Allen quickly passed his warm cup to his left hand using the right one to lightly pull on the other’s own blue scarf. He pressed their foreheads together and softly bopped his rosy nose against Kanda’s, eyes closed and warm smile on his face. Kanda’s eyes immediately went soft, the smallest almost invisible smile appearing on his lips, before briefly returning the affection.
Lena quickly turned around at that. The scene was just…so private. Sentimental. It didn’t feel right to look. She considered it a great achievement that she hadn’t dropped her cup of coffee. The sudden sound at her other side however, told her a different story.
Lavi was blushing when the three sets of eyes turned to him. His cup now lied on the floor, its warm content slowly slipping under the snow.
“It-it slipped…” Lena couldn’t blame him. Again. After all, no one was used to such softness coming from the couple.
ii.-
Three.
Four.
Lena couldn’t take her eyes from the scene. She briefly wondered how many marshmallows would make their way to Allen’s mug before someone else noticed.
She was trying very hard to keep her attention on the omelette sitting in front of her. Trying being the clue word. She simply couldn’t focus on her food, not when Kanda and Allen were sitting across from her, doing that.
That, being Allen slowly and meticulously taking out the small marshmallows from Kanda’s warm chocolate cup (he didn’t even like sweet things for fucks sake had he really ordered that just to give it to Allen?) only to add them to the already unhealthy amount piling over his own chocolate. Kanda didn’t seem to notice at all.
Except that he totally noticed, Lena decided when Kanda simply grabbed a small spoon and picked the remaining marshmallows with it, bringing them to Allen’s cup. Who was completely beaming. Allen gave him the widest grin as thanks and Lena saw Kanda’s lips twitch for a moment. The ghost of a smile.
How could no one else notice!? Everyone in the table were simply keeping their conversations going, completely unaware of the-
A thump rattled the table, followed by a groan and they all turned towards Lavi.
Oh. So she hadn’t been the only one.
iii.-
“Do you think they realize how cute they actually are?” Lavi asked her from his rotating chair, staring blankly at the ceiling as if it would answer his question. Lena couldn’t help but snort.
“Go ahead and ask them, see how it goes” she kept typing on his laptop, the article she was working on was almost done.
“No thanks, I value every single one of my limbs and my life as well.” And with that he straightened up and began rolling back to his own work station.
Lena sighed and stood up to prepare a cup of tea in the small kitchenette in a corner of the room. She was pouring the hot water in the cup when the familiar sound of the bell announced an arrival. Both her and Lavi lifted their eyes to the door.
“Speaking of the devil” she murmured for herself as both Kanda and Allen made their way into the building. They looked like anyone else that was late to work even when the clock marked an hour still too early to be awake at. Disheveled and grumpy.
They seemed ready to snap at anything that moved or anyone that spoke to them, with their clothes a bit rumpled, their scarves horribly twisted around their necks and it seemed like a particularly bad day for Allen’s hair, who had tried to hide it under a beanie (key word being tried since said beanie looked like it had been basically forced over the white haired boy). Kanda’s hair looked perfectly in place under his own beanie though, like always. Lena could bet if someone were to give Kanda the choice of having time for either his clothes or hair, he would totally go for his hair. Not that he didn’t dress nicely anyway.
They were slowly making their way to their work stations, grumbling about only god knows what, the sleepiness still very present on their figures. Specially Allen, he was basically walking with closed eyes. Lena was about to say good morning when Kanda’s grumbling became a long suffering groan.
Then he was pulling Allen from the hoodie of his jacket, the shorter man’s body offering no resistance at all as it was maneuvered so Allen’s face ended up facing Kanda. The latter then carefully placed both of his hands on Allen’s cheeks, slowly tilting his head so he was looking up at Kanda, before quickly ripping the beanie from the shorter man. Allen’s brows furrowed for a moment before Kanda’s hand began working through his hair, realization appeared on his barely opened eyes and his features relaxed.
Kanda’s long fingers worked fast yet delicately, straightening every single stray lock of hair, putting them into place at the same time he worked on the knots and occasionally scratching lightly the scalp. Allen let out a contented sigh and leaned into the touch, not minding at all the grumbling coming from the other man as he worked.
Once Allen’s hair was in order (or as much as it could be) Kanda slipped the beanie back on. They stayed like that for a few seconds before Allen reached for one of Kanda’s long hair locks, softly pulling on it. Kanda went with the movement, allowing himself to be pulled closer, eyes only a bit more awake than Allen’s.
Allen gave him the most sleepy, softest and smallest smile Lena had ever seen, eyes barely open, before placing the lightest yet quickest peck over Kanda’s left lip corner. Kanda was probably as sleepy as Allen was since he simply gave his beanie a light tug and offered a warm small smile before pushing the other forward.
And just like that they were gone to their work stations.
Lena once again considered not dropping her cup of tea the biggest achievement of the day, and it was barely 8:15 am. She looked towards the other side of the room where Lavi was making wild silent movements with his arms to get her attention.
“I took a picture!” He mouthed at her.
“Send it. Now.” She mouthed back.
(She briefly wondered who would be the brave soul to tell them they had [mixed] their beanies. Last she remembered, Kanda’s beanie had no cat ears)
iiii.-
Lena watched amused how Kanda quickly replaced what would’ve been Allen’s third glass of punch for one of apple juice while the other one wasn’t looking. She didn’t blame him, after all, only god knows what was in that punch besides fruit, and she found an odd fondness in Kanda’s act given Allen was neither a fan of alcohol nor good identifying drinks that could contain it. He already seemed a bit sleepy despite the commotion going around them.
A loud screech made her wince and look towards the corner of the room, where Lavi was enthusiastically singing his third song in a row in the small karaoke that someone had had the brilliant idea to bring. Everyone else in the room was either clapping and cheering, doing something weird or passed out on the floor, just another proof that the punch was not to be trusted. And it was barely 11:15.
Their Christmas parties for the last couple of years had been like this, seeing her brother piling up the brownies, Timothy running around the room, Cross sprawled on the floor looking blankly at the ceiling, all these little things and more had become familiar to her.
Even Kanda and Allen leaving earlier than anyone else was familiar for her now. No one had ever asked them about that, and they never gave details, Lena believed it had something to do with Allen’s birthday being the next day and them wanting to spend some time alone.
She watched through her peripheral vision how Kanda stood, bringing Allen with him before leaving for a moment to retrieve their jackets. Allen was probably a bit tipsy and very sleepy given he kept swaying on his feet, eyes practically closed. As soon as Kanda was back in front of him though, Allen rested his forehead against his shoulder, closing his eyes completely.
Kanda said nothing, features only a tad warmer as he very carefully worked on getting Allen inside his jacket, slipping each arm slowly through the sleeves then pulling the zipper up. He moved the Allen’s head very delicately to arrange the scarf around his neck and finally, put the beanie on, taking extreme care of not pulling the hair.
Never did Allen put any resistance, his eyes stayed closed through all the process and while Kanda did it all again on himself Lena had that same feeling that she was seeing something she was not supposed to.
Only when Kanda was done did she stood up and turned towards them. Allen was already moving towards the door, Kanda quickly but lightly pulled on his jacket’s hoodie to stop him from simply opening the door and leaving. They stopped just in front of the door and Lena watched as Kanda pulled Allen’s hoodie on before linking their fingers and turning around to face her. She smiled at them.
“Wish him happy birthday from me and Lavi” Kanda gave her a very small yet very warm smile.
“Sure”, he opened the door and stepped outside, tightening his grip on Allen’s hand, who was sleepily murmuring, “good night Lena”
“Take care!” And with that she watched them walk away a few meters before picking a taxi home, then she closed the door.
*****
Normal Allen was already a disaster when it came to drying his own hair, Kanda didn’t know what he had expected of a sleepy Allen. He watched him from his seat on the bathroom for a few more seconds, the longer locks of hair at the back of his head were still very wet and the only thing Allen was achieving with the towel was to make a nest of the upper strands, combined with the steam and humidity in the small bathroom it was becoming a complete mess.
“Oh god, come here,” Kanda pulled him softly by the sleeve of his pajama shirt, Allen stumbled a bit before finding his place on Kanda’s lap, surrounding Kanda’s own legs with his own. “You’re a mess”
“Mmm, tell me something I don’t know.”
Kanda huffed at that and started to work with the towel, drying the longest locks first and slowly moving upwards. Allen’s eyes kept locked on Kanda’s face, only when the taller man began running his fingers carefully through the strands of silvery white hair to work the worst knots did those silvery eyes closed.
In no time Allen was lightly swaying, Kanda being the only one stopping him from falling backwards. Only when Kanda finished did those bleary eyes opened again.
“Go on ahead, I’ll be there in a minute.”
Allen slowly stood and stumbled out of the bathroom, still wearing no pants and giving it no care at all. Kanda quickly dried his own hair before leaving the small room as well, only to find Allen waiting for him, leaning against the door frame of their shared bedroom. Allen gave him the laziest yet softest smile he had seen all day and the realization of how much he cared and loved this man briefly took the air out of him. Kanda moved towards him and just before he could drag him inside their bedroom Allen stepped in front of him, not allowing him to continue. Then the soft smile transformed into a sleepy grin.
“Oh would you look at that?,” he pointed a long finger up, towards the upper part of the door frame, Kanda followed the direction of said finger. There, horribly taped and about to fall, was a small mistletoe branch. Kanda snorted and looked back at Allen. “Who could’ve left that?”
Allen’s eyes where slightly hooded, more drunk in sleep than on the little alcohol he had had by this point. His smile never wavered as he brought his hands up to cradle Kanda’s face who openly returned a smile of his own before doing the same with his own hands.
“You’re an idiot you know?”
Allen’s smile only grew bigger.
“And you’re in love with an idiot so what does that make you?”
Kanda’s smile grew as well before Allen was pulling him closer placing a kiss that was aimed at Kanda’s lips but instead ended on his nose given the sleepy state he was in. Kanda let out a breathy short laugh at that and brought Allen’s head closer.
“An even bigger idiot, probably.”
Kanda murmured against his forehead before leaving a kiss there. Allen’s sleepy laugh warmed his body from inside out and seconds later he felt two arms snaking around his waist, Kanda did the same and suddenly he found them slowly spinning to Allen’s rhythm.
They made their way into their bedroom just like that, Allen humming some song Kanda didn’t recognize, both of them bare-footed. The little moonlight spilling from the window made Allen literally shine, his pale hair taking a mystical halo-like effect and his even paler skin looked the color of the moon itself, Kanda couldn’t take his eyes away. Meanwhile for Allen, the way the light sharpened Kanda’s features and the way it made his eyes shine brighter was leaving him breathless.
They 'danced’ for what felt like hours before moving to the bed. Kanda got in first and Allen wasted no time, cuddling closer to him and tangling their legs togethers, as Allen’s toes made contact with his leg, Kanda hissed “You and your freezing toes” making Allen laugh softly.
Kanda had always found that oddly fascinating, how Allen himself was a living furnace but his toes were always freezing. A few minutes passed before Allen rolled over, slowly making his way until he finally ended exactly over Kanda, his head over his chest and his fine hair tickling Kanda’s nose just barely. Allen’s body warmth slipped through Kanda’s clothes and the latter unconsciously let out a sigh before wrapping his arms around the man over him.
This, this was what Kanda loved the most. The feeling of belonging, of needing nothing else but this, the comfort, the mutual understanding, Kanda appreciated these moments more than anything else. He felt at home.
He took a quick look to the clock over the night stand, the red numbers letting him now it was 12:01 am. He slowly moved so his mouth was close to Allen’s ear.
“Happy birthday Allen.” He softly whispered. He felt Allen clenching his fists over his shirt, felt him smile against his chest.
“Merry Christmas Kanda.” Allen whispered back.
****
Kanda woke up to a dimly lit bedroom, the smell of honey and apple and a very familiar weight over his chest. And freaking freezing toes against his leg.
He looked down only to find the messy mop of silvery white hair right where it had been last night, which was weird enough given Allen tended to move a lot while sleeping. He softly buried his nose in that soft hair, enjoying the smell of apples from Allen’s shampoo, though he had never understood where the honey-like smell came from.
Kanda could feel the other man’s heart beating against his own chest, his slow breathing. He could stay like this for hours, but a quick peek to the clock informed him it was 9:40 am which meant they didn’t have much time till Lena and Lavi came barging in with a huge birthday cake.
“Hey…” he started rubbing Allen’s back in circular motions and in no time the body over his shifted.
“Unless the place is burning I’m not leaving this bed.” Came the murmured responds and Kanda huffed at it, moving his hand to Allen’s hair, slowly ruffling it.
“It’s your birthday you know?” He brought his hand back down but this time he lifted the other’s shirt a bit, slipping his hand in and continuing his circular motions against the warm skin, Allen giving an appreciative hum. “That only happens once a year”
Allen laughed at that before lifting his head, sleepy eyes locking with Kanda’s and the sloppy warm smile he received made him want to pull the covers and cover that face immediately. Allen simply rested his chin over his chest.
“I’m pretty sure Christmas is also once a year though, Kan-da~” Kanda narrowed his eyes at the tone and lightly pulled on a long strand of hair falling over Allen’s eyes.
“Priorities"
Allen snorted at that and Kanda moved his right hand down that pale face, softly running his thumb over the soft skin of his cheek, over the rounded nose and over closed eyes, Allen leant into Kanda’s hand giving a short sigh.
They stayed like that for a while, Kanda’s right hand holding Allen’s face while the left one rested on his lower back, slowly moving his thumb against the soft skin. Then Allen’s eyes flew open and he was reaching with his own hand to imitate Kanda’s movement. The latter immediately leaned against the smaller hand, closing his eyes and enjoying the slow dragging of fingers over his chin, up to his cheek, against the strands of hair closer to his ear and finally against his eyes as well.
Kanda opened his eyes slowly and Allen was there, all bright smile and warm eyes and Kanda couldn’t help it and kissed him, morning breath be damned. It was more a peck than a kiss, and the movement of certain cold toes against his calf made him hiss, reminding him of that one thing.
“I got you a gift” Allen’s eyes widen for a moment, the bright smile turning into a small grin. Kanda reached down his pillow (probably not the best hiding place but he didn’t care), feeling for the small package and pulling it out when he finally found it.
The reindeer wrapping paper was a bit crumpled but Allen didn’t seem to care as he took it and slowly straightened up so he was now straddling Kanda’s waist. He inspected the package before throwing Kanda a smirk.
“Did Lena wrap it?” Kanda pocked his stomach at that, making the man over him chuckle, so what if he wasn’t the best at wrapping gifts? And what if he got a bit of help even with such a small package?
He watched Allen tear the paper, watched him lift the present higher, trying to find the shape of the gift, and when realization finally appeared in those features, when Allen threw him a glare that was more playful than anything, Kanda smirked at him. Allen’s laugh rang through the room, the sound of it making Kanda’s stomach warm and his fingers tingle.
“You’re an idiot…” even while saying that Allen was laughing. He smacked Kanda on the chest with the toe socks before flopping back over his chest. “I love you.”
The soft whisper of those words against his ear took Kanda by surprise only for a moment, he brought his arms around Allen’s body once again, hugging him tight and close, wide smile on his face as he brought Allen’s head to the crook of his neck.
“I love you too” he whispered back.
Needless to say, there were no more freezing toes that winter.
