I am writing this letter to inform you of her recent battle in the country of Malus. While she was warned several times not to go, the princess sought to help free the innocents trapped there from their torment. Doing so, Leere has lost her magic and is trapped between the world of the living and the dead. She will remain in this state until her spirit is free of her inner turmoil. We have tried what we can to help her, but now, Leere's fate lies in the hands of the deities. We know not when she will wake or if she ever will. All we can do now, is pray for her soul. We will watch over her until Bonegrinder is healed enough to bring her home. I suggest you prepare a safekeeping for her.
I will mourn her with you.
Kasdeya, the Mother of the Monsters'
~
Leere, the woman who poured her heart and soul into vanquishing evil that tormented the innocent, was deep into her coma. Her breath barely moved her chest as she slept deep next to Bonegrinder. In fact, it looked like she wasn’t breathing at all.
"Modoc... it has been nearly two months." Mother knew the host of Prama was grieving. He felt responsible, like he did not do enough to stop the princess from going to Malus. The guilt and sorrow was impacting his ability to heal. "You will have to take Leere back at some point."
"... he saw this as a potential future for tiny princess..."
"I know, Modoc, but even you cannot stop fate's grand design."
"What grand design? Why does she deserve to suffer?!" Bonegrinder slammed a fist on the ground, growling. "All those years ago, Prama told me if this snake devoured her, that there would be less troubles... but he could not do that to a child! A child is innocent! She was innocent and yet refused to believe it!"
Leere once more laid motionless, a sleeping beauty to some. Perhaps a living corpse in the eyes of others.
"Leere will be returned to her family home." Mother informed Bonegrinder. "Her family is in the process of securing her old room from when she was a child. Enchantments will ensure her safety and only a select few will be allowed to visit her."
"... when will they take her?"
"Today." Mother had placed Leere's body inside a crystalline case. The stone was radiating magic and levitating off the ground. This made transportation easier. "I will give you some time to say your goodbyes. Once you are healed, I suggest you go talk to Joy and Sunny. They will need to hear it directly from you why Leere went on this hopeless quest."
"... he will do as you say."
As Mother left to give him privacy with Leere, Bonegrinder looked down at her sleeping body. She did appear dead, but in reality, the princess was trapped in her slumber. The Anagari felt a mixture of emotions. He was angry, upset, and truly bitter. He wondered if she could hear him... or if his words would even reach her.
"... why... did you not listen to this snake?" Bonegrinder's voice was low at first. "He warned you, tiny princess, he warned you against this mission. He foresaw what was a possibility... which is now a reality." In a fit of anger, Bonegrinder slammed his fist into a wall. "Why are you so foolish?! So unbelievably stupid?! Putting yourself in danger for the greater good will do no one any good if you're not here to help Luimaya! Why didn't you give him a chance to save you?! Why wouldn't you let him save you?! Do you think you're worthless?! Expendable?!" The Anagari was shouting now. "Or is it that you just revel in torturing him?! Did you not know that he was supposed to fucking eat you?! All those years ago in the catacombs, he had the chance to rid the world of a piece of that Tzitzimine once and for all, but he couldn't do it! Bonegrinder could not do it! Modoc refused to do it! Prama warned him of what would come if he didn't, but you. Are. Innocent!!! Why didn't you believe him?!" Breathing heavily, the Anagari then had fresh tears rolling from his eyes. "Why couldn't he save just one? One poor, victim of this Chaos... one of his family. Is he destined to lose more? You should be the one striving to live, Leere... he should be the one to die. He has lived countless lifetimes over because of Prama..." He took a shaky breath, and then asked, brokenhearted, "You never listened to him... why couldn't you just listen? Joy and Sunny, everyone... they miss you..."
The silence was deafening. A part of him must have known that, without Leere, Destroyer wouldn’t have been revealed to the world so early, and Tyrannin, the Demon of Teufel linked to her destiny, could not have been defeated.
"... he doesn't know if or when you will wake. He sincerely hopes you do for your family's sake.. He will keep true to Mother's request and see your wife and daughter, but..." Bonegrinder then added with a hint of bitterness. "But do not come asking him for help once you discover you have no magic left to spend. He tried to help you, warn you, pull you away from the situation so it would never come to be... and you did not listen. Why would you listen when you wake?"
It was then Blue and White arrived to take Leere to Hyrule. The sisters looked so sad and worried. "Bonegrinder? Will you be all right?" White asked him.
"Those wounds are horrendous. Do you need some of our energy?" Blue inquired with a frown.
"He will heal, his beautiful girls, but he will require more time." Bonegrinder then instructed.
"Take Leere straight to her secured area. Do not stop for anyone or anything."
"We won't, Bonegrinder."
With a final look, he watched as they took the glass coffin out with them. ~ Back at the castle, Sunny was shaking. She knew that Leere would be arriving today. She knew that she was in a... coma of some kind. She even did her best to explain the situation to her daughter. But she was still terrified to see the state of her wife in person. With Leere’s siblings, she was on the edge of a breakdown. “Is there a draft in here? It’s too cold... we can’t have Leere be cold when she arrives.”
Sunny looked incredibly worn down. The last couple months took a mental wear on her.
"That's my fault, I'm sorry." Zarazu apologized to Sunny. "I... the area gets cold when I'm upset or angry. It will disappear once I leave."
"You know after we see her, Leere will have to stay in this room for her own safety." Covarog was trying to be strong for his family and Leere's daughter and wife. "You may visit her anytime you like, though to protect her, she will have to stay here."
“Thank you, your majesties.” Sunny squeezed her hat close in her hands. “Is this lifestyle common with your family? I hear so many stories of you all taking bold, but dangerous journeys.”
"We have taken many perilous trips, true, but... we never willingly want to place ourselves in danger." Orana held tight to Corsaire. "We knew our capabilities."
"And at least we knew our chances beforehand." Ralnor was very solemn with Cass at his side. "Leere was by far the most reckless... but also the one who tried to keep us together when we were butting heads."
"She could drink us under the table." Tebanam chuckled lightly. "And always gave us a hard time about being giants when she was small."
"She loved her music too." Kanisa remarked. "And dancing."
Sunny was glad Joy was with Luimaya and the other kids, because she started to break down. Slowly, tears came down her face. “When those things were a rising from the dead, I was so scared. But... I heard her voice when they all came to an end ya? That was her wasn’t it. She saved us, didn’t she?”
"... I don't know." Covarog admitted. "Maybe it was her. Maybe it was a spirit. Either way, we knew she was fighting whatever demons lurked within her or around her."
"... I never knew that's why she wished to go to Malus or I would have tried to stop her." Ralnor admitted. "She's always too keen to solve problems on her own."
"We all would have tried to stop her."
“She said she had to stop something bad from wanting to hurt us all. I hope she succeeded, but...” Sunny wiped her tears, sniffling badly and in need of a tissue. “I just want to hold her again.”
"She's here..." Blue and White carefully eased Leere's container through the portal.
Seeing Leere in the glass, Sunny freaked. “Leere!? LEERE!?!” Throwing herself at the glass, she was indeed overly shocked to see her like this. “Why is she like this?! Let her out!”
"It's to protect her." Blue explained to Sunny gently. She knew that the woman was still a touch nervous around her sister, White, due to the bad experiences with spiders. "We can't let her out. It will only open when... she wakes up."
“No! You can’t do that! How can I hold her hand like this? How can I even think of showing Joy her mother being in this state? She looks like a corpse stuck in here!”
"We had to make sure she'd be protected and this was the only way that we could think of." White tried her best to assure Sunny. "No one will be able to hurt her. It's enchanted stone all the way from Omisha. Mother had it constructed just for Leere."
"I'm sorry, Sunny, but I'm sure that Joy will understand." Blue wanted to make Sunny feel better as well, but was not sure how to do it. So she took a gentle approach. "There are still forces out there that will look for her. This way, Leere won't be hurt."
“No.... no gods why. Why did it have to be like this?” Little energy on her, Sunny leaned on Leere’s casket and cried her heart out, muffling the sound by burying her face.
~
Bonegrinder had to stay in Omisha for another three months before he was fully healed. It was almost half a year now since he had seen Hyrule. There were new scars and an endless sense of guilt etched into the Anagari. Once Mother gave permission for him to leave, he decided the first stop was going to be to Sunny and Joy. He knew not of how they would receive him. Yet, Bonegrinder was simply going to offer his apology... then leave.
Sunny was trying to keep busy with her job at the ranch. It helped, in a way. Leere still hadn’t waken up.
It was best to visit when night cloaked the sky. Bonegrinder waited close until dinner time. His usual approach was to just slither under the house and come up through the floor. Leere hated it when he did that, and he did so on purpose to annoy her. But... now it was just Sunny and Joy. Sighing heavily, the Anagari decided to get this part over with as quickly as he could. Leere's family deserved answers to the questions they had. Gently, he knocked on the door.
Joy, ran to the door, excited by someone coming at this time of night. “Mom!?” Her excitement died the moment she saw Bonegrinder. “Oh...”
"... he... this snake knows you and sunshine are... he knows you might not want to see him but..." Bonegrinder groaned, sliding a hand down his face. "This was much easier in his head." He took a small breath. "If you will allow him... he has come to apologize and answer your questions..."
“Momma! The Snakeman is here!”
Sunny heard her daughter shout for her. Bonegrinder? At this time of night? Sighing, she put down her local paper and went to the door. “Mister Bonegrinder. What brings you here?”
"To apologize to you and your daughter... and to answer to the best of his ability any questions you pose to him." Bonegrinder had to bend down to greet Sunny, his horns almost scraping the top of the porch.
“For what?” Sunny seemed genuinely surprised.
"He was... there with Leere when..." Bonegrinder paused, closing his eyes and trying to keep his voice steady. "When she... was left to the state she is in now."
Sunny nodded, crossing her arms. “Was she right about the danger? And wanting to save lives?”
"Yes, she was right about the danger. Yes, he warned her. No, she did not listen." Bonegrinder felt a flicker of anger at Leere not heeding his words again, but pushed it aside to focus on Joy and Sunny. "And... as far as lives saved... after that blast, this snake would be surprised if anyone was left..."
“Did she try to save people?”
"She did. She was... unsuccessful."
“Did you?”
"... no." Bonegrinder had no reason to lie. "He tried to save Leere and saved one of his children... that is all."
“You didn’t even try to help those people? That’s what Leere wanted, that’s what she fought for.”
"A long time ago, he did help them and it cost him dearly." Bonegrinder told Sunny, still having disdain for the Mortuus who hurt his homeland all that time ago. "Leere did not tell him that she wished to stay there to help people. She merely requested we travel there to see if we could find them. Honestly, he was surprised that there were some there that were sane after the horrors experienced in that land. Even so... friend or foe is not a question in Malus. There, one must be cautious of everyone. You can never tell who is two-faced, who is friend, and who is foe."
“I reckon she asked you to save any of those sane people. It’s in her nature. Wanting to help people like that. I also reckon that you choose not to.”
"Leere wanted Bonegrinder to create a portal to take the Mortuus into his homeland like he did long ago. He refused. He will not, shall not, nor ever again expose his people to death." Bonegrinder was tired of hearing this. He would not be held accountable for another mass slaughter like all those centuries ago. "It would have been useless anyway as he tried to tell her. Mother would have sent them right back. Or worse, she would have had her children devour them before any black magic could have been used against us."
“Then you could have sent them here! I can’t believe you didn’t consider that option in your noggin.”
Bonegrinder gave her a hard look. "Do you think that he would take a chance on endangering you or the little one?"
“We’re a country of diversity. It’s what Leere nearly died to protect. I thought you’d honour that.”
"A country of living people who know not of the horrors of Malus." Bonegrinder corrected her. "And not of this one's kind existence either. He will not apologize for this action. The risks outweighed any other reason you can produce." He then said, "Leere made a deal behind Bonegrinder's back and tricked him into taking her there. Do you not understand the guilt he feels for her state? Many times, he tried to force her, for her own safety, to leave and she ran from him. He tried so hard to protect her... yet, she insisted on fighting for a land that has long since been lost."
“Well, I think she’s a hero for what she tried to do.” Sunny gave him a sad look. “I think she’d have appreciated a friend who believed in the world as much as she did.”
"Leere has seen little of the world, sunshine. Bonegrinder has seen too much to have faith in it entirely." The Anagari told the ranch woman with a frown. "The Lorleidian queen once said that she did not understand why humans hated each other, or monsters, or anything different from themselves. That her old home was a paradise devoid of such ways, because they treasured each other. He wonders, sunshine... he wonders if perhaps one day the world will return to focusing on love instead of power."
“Then maybe you should have helped Leere in her part.” Sunny sighed looking to Joy. “I’m going to see Leere tomorrow. I need to go to bed to get some shut eye. You should too.”
Bonegrinder's tail flicked in anger at that statement. Was the sunshine blaming him for Leere's state? He tried so hard to save her. It was not like he laid on the dirt and did nothing!
"This snake did try to help her and look where that foolishness got her." He stated bitterly. "He warned her not to go. Even you have the common sense of knowing the difference between danger and compassionate pursuit."
“Well, that’s how our Leere is, ain’t she. I’m choosing the look at the good that comes out of this. The heartbreak aside...” Sunny sighed, reigning in her emotions. “Heartbreak aside, I want to believe that her sacrifice means something Mr. Bonegrinder. I’m looking forward to seeing her awake.”
"... you do know there is a chance that when she does wake..." Bonegrinder did not want to rain on Sunny's parade, but he had to be honest with Leere's wife. He took a small breath and stated. "It could be years from now. It could be tomorrow. We are not sure. Though when she does wake, she will be without magic."
“I’ll be here when she does. And... who needs magic anyways, eh?”
"Just be prepared. The Leere you knew before may very well be different. The loss of magic affects each creature of this world differently."
Sunny didn’t need to bear that thought. “Good night, Mr. Bonegrinder. May you rest well.”

Dhakk had already made up his mind that his brother was going to have a very slow death as he finally emerged from the rubble. He would rip Prama's soul into pieces before devouring them, wiping him from existence. The Destroyer god had been surprised that his brother allowed his host to use his personal celestial magic. Did he not consider the consequences of letting that snake use such power? The Anagari could have been ripped to shreds. Though, Destroyer was sure that he noticed some rips in the Anagari's body. Soon enough, that mortal flesh would not be able to heal and Prama would be left without a host. Already, his brother was pushing the limits.
The Tower of Death, the surrounding village, and territory was reduced to blood and brick in complete rubble. Having collapsed right on top of Dhakk, it took time for him to dig his way out. When he finally reached the surface, he could even have the joy of sunlight, as a figure stood over him, their shadow cast on them.
With an ancient mask on their face, a long purple braid down their back, with kings’ cloths, Teufel looked down at Dhakk with his devilish eyes that burned into souls. “Rise Dhakk.”
"I do apologize about your tower. I had no clue that my brother was able to tap into his power. It's risky for him to do so." Dhakk managed to stand, brushing dirt and dust from his Drakkan body. "All those eons ago, I dealt him such a blow... to think he's not at full capability after all this time definitely gives me satisfaction." He then had a very wicked grin on his face. "Though when he did his power, he was not focused. I was able to peer into his mind."
“Good... And where’s my missing piece? Did your brother kill the girl before she could release it?”
"No, it was released... though Leere managed to subdue the demon which escaped from her." Dhakk frowned. "She seems to have died from it."
“Subdue? If she simply subdued it then...” Teufel looked around, taking in the air. “She killed it... impossible.” With a demanding finger, Teufel causally pointed it at Destroyer. “You were supposed to make sure it reached maturity. I can feel that it almost succeeded...”
"I tortured the woman, and had to contain my brother at the same time. While I am a god of destruction, even I can only do so much, trapped in this body." Dhakk dryly gestured to the Drakkan's flesh. "The Wraith was able to surprise me when I was close to decapitating my brother's host. Though, do you wish to hear the good part of this loss or not?"
“You may.”
"When I peered into my brother's mind, I finally found the host of Kaksa... if such a prophecy be true."
A fire in Teufel’s eyes flickered. “The world has been plunged into fear, and with the Shadow Sage destroyed they have lost an unreplaceable piece of hope for survival. We can use this to our advantage going forward. Now. Who is she?”
"The daughter of the demon pig's spawn and the elemental witch... I believed from Prama's memories of seeing her from inside the castle's wall, her name is... Luimaya."

It must have felt like a good hour of walking through the fog together. No sound echoing in the cave or even their foot steps. As they kept traveling, Leere wanted to get to know Black more. “I never knew you were an undead all this time. How’d you get so good at hiding that fact?”
"Well, I'm not alive and I'm not dead, so I suppose you'd call me undead. Technically, I'm trapped in the moment of dying." Black explained to Leere, trying to recall what Bonegrinder told him. "Almost like being stuck in limbo, but I'm on earth still. It is said that I will not cease to be until I resolve my unfinished business. Yet, unlike other Wraiths, so I've been told, I'm not mindless."
“So what, you’re a Hellspawn?”
"No, I'm not a demon, just... a trapped soul, I suppose." Black shrugged once. "I'm not exactly sure how to explain it. Necromancy doesn't effect me, so I might not be completely undead, just... odd."
"Black is no Hellspawn, tiny princess, just a unique individual." Bonegrinder told Leere. "Years and years ago, this old snake found Black wandering in a swamp near Yenaldooshi in Omisha. He was able to help him regain part of his memories."
"I recalled that I was traveling back home from Al-Daida with my family and someone had double crossed me."
Leere gave Black a look. There was a weird tilt of her head, as if she was trying something out, and after a moment, she smiled with a simple hum to herself.
"If you have a better explanation, I'm all ears." Black's glowing lavender eyes curved in good humor from behind his head wrap, his body hidden beneath several layers of flowy clothes.
"There have been very few Wraiths that Bonegrinder has seen in this lifetime." The Anagari then admitted. "Even this snake has not all the answers on some issues, but an idea."
“Your soul and body certainly have unique characteristics. Much different then most undead I’ve encountered. And you certainly have control of your own body.”
"That much is true, though I am still trying to figure out what my unfinished business is." Black admitted to the Shadow Sage. "I thought it was to get revenge for my family. Yet, I didn't cease to be after I found their killer."
“You fulfilled your duty in avenging your family, but your destiny lies elsewhere.” Leere pondered a little more about his situation. Spirits, physical or otherwise, usually had a purpose for lingering on the mortal plane after death. “Perhaps you must bring unity to someone else?”
Suddenly as if they were stepping out of a portal, the fog disappeared. They knew they had been walking at a slow incline down, so the sight before the party of travellers was unexpected. An open area with sky was set upon their eyes. Only this time it was not as much a pretty sight. The sky was dreary with clouds hiding any blue. Replacing grasslands was an eerie forest landscape, with many dead trees amongst puke green pine trees. Finally, there was more earth then grass.
"This is what he recalls from the last time he was in this land." Bonegrinder's features contorted into disgusted frown. "Decay."
“I don’t sense anything too off, but be on guard.” Leere sensed life wasn’t dead, but had simply stopped in time was the best choice of wording. As they kept walking, they eventually found a path to walk along. “Civilization ahead?”
"Yes, there should be... unless that has changed as well." Bonegrinder did not sound too enthused about the prospect of seeing more residents of the land of Malus. "This snake still says its not too late to turn back."
Leere looked up to see a couple fairies fly overhead. They looked more insect like, but paid no attention to the group. “Bonegrinder, you promised me a day. You going to use it complaining?”
"He will use it to wipe his scaled ass, complain as much as he likes, and remind you repeatedly that this is a bad idea." The Anagari's tail twitched. "We should not even be here."
"That means he's irritated." Black murmured to Leere.
Leere observed her surroundings with a sigh. Suddenly, they heard talking from nearby. With a hand single, she issued Black and Bonegrinder to be quiet so they’d investigate. Near a lake, there were two men, gutting fish they caught.
"Fuck." Bonegrinder grumbled under his breath when Leere caught sight of the 'local natives'.
“Kenshi. How much longer must we wait?”
“We’ll be gone soon Lang. The whereabouts of my daughter are unknown, but I’m certain this lake is where the anomalies originate from.”
Leere watched the two men; both had darker hair like her. After much consideration, she decided to slowly approach them.
Before Leere could get too far, Bonegrinder's tail whipped out, grabbed her around the waist and pulled her back. "What. Are. You. Doing?!"
“Engaging the locals. We have to form communication or we’ll get nowhere.” Leere gritted her teeth at him in hushed whispers. She didn’t like to be man handled like a child.
"We do not know if they're friendlies or hostiles." Black reminded Leere. "It's best to observe firstly."
"Listen to the assassin, tiny princess, he knows better than you do."
From over ahead, a fairy looked down at them. The little insect seemed to scowl at them. Slowly, it flew over to the two men. They stopped their conversation, and listened to the fairy. Suddenly they tensed, looking over to the hiding spot of the group. They both jolted upwards, grabbing sheathed swords. “Kenshi! Go back to the village! Another monster has somehow broken through the barrier, this time in day light!”
"... I'm assuming that means you, Bonegrinder." Black mused dryly with a tiny smirk. "Cause I do not sense any other monsters around here."
"Fuck Prama and Dhakk sideways..." Bonegrinder cursed under his breath. "... go catch them."
"As you wish."
"But don't kill them yet, we need information."
Leere decided to try and run out toward them. “Stop! I’m a Mortuus! I’m friendly!”
The man Leere identified by observation as Lang took a stance, drawing his sword. This revelation only made him more on guard. “You are not from either village.”
Black earned his nickname for being able to blend into the shadows initially, however, he was quite adept at hiding in any environment. In order to keep Kenshi from escaping, the Wraith simply pinned the Mortuus against a rotting tree, both hands trapped behind the back. "I have the second one, Bonegrinder." "Good. We require information." The Anagari slithered out from his spot, eying Lang. "Drop that sword before this snake removes your hand for threatening the tiny princess."
Lang was memorized by the gigantic beast slivering down from the tree line. “The gods really are abandoning us...” Tightening his grip on his blade when he saw Kenshi be pinned, the man planted his feet. “You must be from the capital. I won’t let you take me without a fight.”
Leere glanced over to Black, standing between both Lang and Bonegrinder. “Will you two stand down?! My name is Leere Dragmire. I am a Sage of Hyrule investigating a dark source of evil coming from Malus. I know that there are innocents trapped here. I’m a friend that wishes to help you. If my companion releases your friend, will you lower your guard?”
Lang, looked to Kenshi. He only slightly lowered his stance. “Release my friend.”
"Put down your sword first." Bonegrinder was incredibly stubborn. "Raising a blade at a lady is no small thing."
"Bonegrinder, I believe Leere can handle herself. After all, that sword is very... rusty." Black used basic logic. "And unkept."
"... very well. Though harm her, and this Anagari will remove your head from your shoulders." Black released Kenshi, almost chucking when the Mortuus scrambled away from him.
Kenshi stood by Lang’s side, the latter paying closer attention to Bonegrinder as he sheathed his sword. “You said you came from the outside? It should be impossible for a monster of your size to enter. The barrier of Destroyah disintegrates monsters and demons bigger than a house cat from entering. Not the mention the guardian Mata keeps an eye out for the demonic.”
"Bonegrinder is neither demonic or a monster..." Black stated, earning a blank glance from the two Mortuus. "Let me rephrase that, Bonegrinder is neither demonic nor a monster of these regions. He hails from Omisha, not of Hellspawn origins."
"Pitiful, magical barriers and ancient Colossi are nothing more than pests." Bonegrinder stated bitterly. "Destroyer's works are sloppy."
“Omisha... the land of the cowards who bask in the sun. That’d explain your appearance. Still, we should have been protected from your kind entering too.”
Leere felt tensions start to rise. “What matters is that none of us wish to bring you harm. I merely wish to learn. Can you bring us to your village?”
Both men looked to each other, then spoke in a language, or perhaps code Leere didn’t understand.
Suddenly, Bonegrinder had Lang up off the ground by his neck, his tail wrapped dangerously tight around the Mortuus' throat. He brought the man closer to his face, fangs exposed and snarling. The Anagari was pissed. To keep Kenshi in place, he wrapped the man in his coils. "You dare call us Echidnans cowards when your kind tried to drown the world in Hellspawn? Tortured the innocent? Slaughtered villages full of children?" Bonegrinder's jaw was unhinged, highly tempted to rip out the man's throat. Black warned Leere that there was a reason why the Anagari detested Malus. This country was the responsible for the demise of his home. "It makes this snake wonder if you were worth saving after you killed so many of us alongside Dhakk for choosing to follow Prama."
“BONEGRINDER!!!” On instinct, a large shadowy hand gripped Bonegrinder by the hair, pulling him away from Lang as another shadow hand caught the man from falling. “Do not escalate tensions! I did not bring you here to frighten innocents! Stop acting like a monster!” Both the men were afraid, both by Bonegrinder and by Leere’s magic. “She’s a sorcerer.”
“Just like the elder and Bi-Hanzo.”
Leere glared Bonegrinder down as her shadows calmed down. Slowly, she turned back to the pair. “I overheard you had a missing daughter. I’m a mother myself. Perhaps I can assist you.”
Kenshi nodded. “Yes... Lang. Go to the village and warn them to not attack the Echidnan on sight. I’ll stay with the group and walk with them as a sign of trust...”
Lang, not wanting to be anywhere near Bonegrinder, agreed. “Gladly.”
"He is a monster, Leere," Bonegrinder was angry with the princess for using her magic on him. He leaned down and growled, "It matters not to him the lives of those who could be responsible for the death of his family. Prama agreed to this folly because he wishes for some good to come to this God-forsaken land." The snake warned her, "You are innocent of the crimes of Malus, Leere. The others are not. Friend or foe is not debatable here."
Black was not one for expressing emotion with his stoic face, but even he grimaced at Bonegrinder's icy words. It was rather clear the hate that the Anagari had for this country. Yet, as the shaman slithered off a distance from the princess to cool his head, the Wraith approached Leere. "I apologize." Black said to the Shadow Sage, "I should have warned you of his ire. It is nothing against you, Leere. There are certain horrors that he does not wish to recall and old wounds that have never healed. Perhaps I should go forward with you and have Bonegrinder wait here. I understand your mission, but he... is having a difficult time."
“If he feels he needs to distance himself, then fine.” Leere gestured for Black to follow her as Kenshi lead the way. “All enemies or all allies view is a narrow one though.”
"How would you feel if you had to traverse into the country responsible for the death of your family?" The Wraith asked Leere, curious of her answer. "From what I remember of my human days, I think I would be afraid... and angry."
The shadow sage was sad that her friend couldn’t keep his emotions in check, worried she comprised her relationship with the village before even meeting them. When they arrived at the village, it was a small town, but held a decent enough community. A town hall, a saloon, multiple houses and a church were present buildings seen. Many Mortuus gathered around, astonished by news of outsiders. With so many red eyes on her, Leere could see how tired many of them were. “Hello. I am Leere. Mortuus of Hyrule.”
She was greeted with silence in return. Some of them went back to their daily routines immediately, but kept an eye on her. One man approached, narrowing his gaze at her. “Lang tells me you travel with an Echidnan. Where is it?”
As Black followed Leere to the village, he kept a keen lookout. His master was not too far, he could still sense the Anagari. Though, something felt... a touch off here. The residents looked like sleep had eluded them for ages. "Bonegrinder felt it was best to hold back, lest he..." Black thought of the appropriate word. "Scare the masses." He then inquired. "Why do you ask?"
“As this villages remaining experienced protector, I demand all parties are accounted for.” The man had an air about him that the others didn’t, that he could back up his demands. “The masses live in constant fear of unknown dangers. If he was here, he wouldn’t be unknown.”
Leere held a hand back to him. “He’ll be here shortly. What is your name, if I might ask?”
“I am Bi-Hanzo. Member of the Order of Balance.”
"Balance?" That caught Black's interest. "As in Kaksa? Mother Goddess?"
It was Bi-Hanzo’s first moment to be intrigued. “Yes. The very same. Though I am a dying breed. Both Destroyah and Proxamus, the names we give for Life and Destruction gods, had a hand in Malus’ creation. Our magic of necromancy was fuelled to please Proxamus. Yet both gods haven’t graced us in thousands of years. In time, the factions of Mortuus fell to darkness, blind in dedication to either. Few know of balance and try to keep these communities alive. There is no escape from Malus. Only survival.”
That was a monumental amount of information Leere absorbed. “Well, that’s good. Because I think the Destroyer is on the rise in Malus, and many of you are in grave peril.”
It seemed his master was correct about one issue; the people of Malus had lost hope. He had heard the tales of creation and destruction from his time when he was alive. Then, he learned more as a Wraith underneath Bonegrinder's tutelage. Yet, he was unsure of who was friend or foe. Perhaps a small test was needed... "We are here to seek answers." Black informed Bi-Hanzo. "For the prophecy."
“Prophecy? Those are many, and have many interpretations. Come, I will take you to the elder.”
Before Leere could follow Bi-Hanzo, Black placed his hand on the Shadow Sage's shoulder, silently asking her not to move just yet. "And how do we know this isn't a ploy?"
“I don’t. But I do this thing called taking a leap of faith? Can you jump yourself Black?”
"Jump, run, hide, take your pick. Though you must understand our caution." Black told the man, "The stories we have heard are most unsettling."
“They are most likely true. However, is every fallen leaf red?”
"Only if it's soaked up blood from the ground."
Black’s view on judging people by one cover was unsettling to the woman, discouraging even. It was when Bi-Hanzo added his thoughts to Leere and Black’s exchange of metaphors. “Ah. You can only see violence. That, is why your vision is flawed.”
Leere liked the man’s thinking, nodding along. Some villagers followed the group to a church near a graveyard looking down on the village. Knocking on the door, Bi-Hanzo waited. Finally, he opened the door to the church and gestured the pair to go inside. Leere did so without fear. Inside were very old bleachers, scratched wooden pillars, and a cross hanging on the wall. At the alter, a woman was sitting down reading a book wrapped in leather.
Bi-Hanzo respectfully bowed to the elder. “Lady Jackalen. There is a Mortuus, an undead, and an Echidnan here. Somehow, they penetrated the protective barriers to our small realm.”
"A Wraith, thank you, not an undead. There's a difference. I think." Black insisted as he looked around the church. It was better kept than the whole village. It also made him feel slightly uneasy. Was it because he was trapped between death and life?
Leere walked forward, bowing her head. When she approached the woman, she noticed how white her eyes were. “I am Leere Dragmire. Shadow Sage of Hyrule. I don’t want to alarm you, but I believe your people are in grave danger.”
“A sage? My... how young you look.” The elder cackled lightly to herself. “And you are correct. My people are indeed in danger. Or countless generations, we’ve been kept safe. Despite how much they might have changed, Destroyah and Proxamus gave us a way to protect our pocket realms from the outside world. Only now, within the last decade, those who isolated themselves from the outside world have been going silent. Communities we once shared a psychic communication with snuffed out. We didn’t know what caused this. Until two weeks ago. Devilish abominations coming out in the night to kill and steal away those who live here. Despite all my magics, I can’t find the source of where they reside.”
"Hellspawns." Black stated at the elder's words. "They're good at hiding and lurking around in the darkness, waiting for the right moment to strike. Difficult to track too if they're being aided by another source of magic. I'm surprised they haven't overrun the village yet." He glanced at the few people in the church. "Perhaps they're looking for someone."
“I’ve fought against several unidentified creatures, killed a few, but there’s always more, and there’s always someone taken.” Bi-Hanzo gripped the sides of his coat uncomfortably.
Leere pried for more information. She needed to know what specific danger lied in the shadows of this country. “Do you know if any evil spirits or gods have risen in Malus?”
The elder shook their head. “We do not. No gods have answered our prayers. And we know little of outside this realm of protection. It is our bubble. Our way of life.”
"... what prophecy do you know of?" Black decided to skip past the doom and gloom and search for answers. "My master requires answers."
“Which one? There are many Wraith. Mostly about their chosen god raising hell upon the earth. Some hope a saviour will liberate Malus from torment. Some think they will be servants while all their enemies will become slaves. Even here, some make sacrifices and offerings to their chosen lord in hopes of having their wishes granted.”
"The prophecy my master has long believed is of a young woman of fire, born of a mother of death, would be the host of Kaksa, the Mother Goddess." Black decided there was no harm in elaborating. There were various versions of the prophecy, but all resulted in the same ending. "Dhakk and Prama would have a choice to make. Either they would fight each other, or fight against Chaos."
“Chaos? Ahhhh.”
Leere looked to Black, unsure by the elder’s reaction. “What about Chaos?”
“Hehehe. Oh... oh! This is rich. I remember you now.” The elder’s white eyes were glossed over on Leere. “You were the one who’s parents fled. There are many in Malus who worship Destroyah or Proxamus. Few worship and know of Balance. But very little dared to be of the Cult of the Devil. The Devil came from Chaos you know. Evil was born of Chaos. That evil has a special connection in Malus. Those who served Proxamus were wise to kill those who worshiped the Devil.”
Leere’s comfort levels went from a 10 to a 1 real fast. “I know very little about my birth parents.”
“But you hold the markings, don’t you? I can sense it. Feel it. Hmmm. You’re marked for sacrifice.” Lady Jackalen walked away towards a book shelf, trying to find a specific text.
Black sensed Leere's abrupt uneasiness. The mentioned of Chaos certainly caught the old woman's attention. There were several names for this horrible god of discord, though he knew just a few; Teufel and Tzitzimime. Leere, she almost looked... slightly panicked. Like she was not expecting the elder to recall her or her despicable parents.
“Yes. Here we are.” The elder returned, placing a book down with a face as the cover. Flipping the page, she showed an illustration of the exact tattoo Leere had on her back. “This is it, isn’t it? Ah, no need for words. Your expression tells me enough. You are slated for sacrifice.” Leere looked much paler than usual. “I was. Past tense.”
“Heh heh heh. Present tense, I’m afraid. I can... I can feel the gate on you has been altered. But you are still a viable gateway if there were those who wished to use you.”
“For what?”
“A summoning of great and vile torment to be resurrected.” Flipping the pages, she went through many horrifying sketches of alien looking monstrosities. “Chaos has many spawns of its own. But it’s also a being, by nature, that is fractured. The body, a heart, mind, soul. Chaos is many. The Devil would like it all back. And you, just like one in every generation of Mortuus, carry a seed of resurrection in you. Congratulations on such a terrible fate.”
Bonegrinder had once told Black some time ago that he wished to save the 'tiny princess' from her fate. He really did not know what the Anagari spoke of then, but now, he understood. The assassin recalled the times that Leere was angry with the giant snake for keeping the details of her past from her. She wanted to know and now she did. Yet, Black could not help but feel sorry for her... and for Bonegrinder. The Anagari tried so hard to keep this knowledge from Leere.
Leere looked away when she saw the creature that oozed from her spine when Bonegrinder removes a sigil so long ago. “How did you deal with these children before?”
“We killed them before they could pose a threat to the world. Proxamus would have understood. Destroyah would agree. And it’s what Balance would have desired. And no, before you ask, I don’t think it wise to order your execution. That said, I don’t know why you’ve come here. There is no escape from Malus.”
“What if I can help you? Everyone who is here find a way out?”
“Dear child. That is gullible thinking. Naive. Even if you save us, there are still other villages. I doubt you can find them all.”
"How dare you think you have the power to speak for Kaksa." Bonegrinder was as sneaky as always, having found his way to the church, following Leere's scent. He managed to slip inside through the back, and was now on his usual lounging spot; the ceiling. He had coiled his massive body around the chandeliers, dust falling from above. It was clear the snake was in a foul mood even more so now. "The Mother Goddess abhors the murder of innocent children, even those who had no say in what happened to them. No, this is your failure. Failing to protect them."
"... and this is my master." Black stated with a stoic face. "Bonegrinder."
Lady Jackalen didn’t look surprised. Bi-Hanzo fists glowed a blue aura, but he kept his ground. The elder looked up, frowning lightly. “A swift end is preferable to torture they’d have gone through. It has been a long, long time since I’ve seen one of your kind. Still arrogant. Still boastful of living in better lands. After all, the Mother is part of the reason we remain trapped here. Besides, the children after death could be resurrected. They just needed their minds, not their souls.”
Leere was a little disgusted by that statement. “How old are you? How many souls have you taken?”
“Old enough. Blood magic is a gateway to soul manipulation. As I know you know.” The elder walked over to a seat, taking a moment to sit down. “Although, there’s something about you too, Echidnan. Something faint.”
"And your kind are nothing but slaughterers of the innocent." Bonegrinder hissed through gritted fangs. "Mother of the Monsters erected the barrier because your people decided to play with Chaos' little pets. We Echidnans will not apologize for protecting ourselves and our homeland." The Anagari scoffed as the Elder tried to analyze him. "You know nothing of this old snake, old woman."
"Bonegrinder is ancient like you, lady." Black had no filter.
“Ha. You think yourself a light to our darkness? Yourself righteous? You know that we desired help, yet you turned us away. All lands did. Or they enslaved us. Such was the design of those who fell to true darkness in Malus.”
"Why would Echidnans want to help the kind responsible for the rampaging of their homes? Friend or foe, the Mortuus are two faced." Bonegrinder snorted. "You are going senile, old woman, if you think we would do such a thing." He slid down the wall of the church, settling beside of Leere and Black. "Do you understand now why this snake did not want to bring you here, tiny princess? There is nothing for you here."
“Bi-Hanzo, what do you think? Do you wish freedom from Malus?”
The man was surprised Leere had the fortitude to address him so quickly. “I’d wish it more than anything.”
Leere turned her attention away from the elder and Bonegrinder. “Then I don’t know how long it will take, but I can take you and your people away from this all.”
“I don’t know if I can trust your friend. Unless...”
“Unless what?”
“Unless you stay the night. Protect my village.”
This could be a way of discovering the evil that plagued her dream. Nodding, Leere held an arm out to shake. “I accept.”
Before Bonegrinder, Black, or Lady Jackalen could disagree, Bi-Hanzo shook her hand. “A woman of her word? I look forward to it.”
"You don't have to like my master, but I would highly advise trusting him." Black told Bi-Hanzo and Lady Jackalen. "He knows more than you think he does."
"Let the people believe what they wish, Black, it is of no consequence to this snake." Bonegrinder dismissed the thought from the assassin's viewpoint. "You know what they think of him and you know what he thinks of them."
"What about the prophecy, Bonegrinder?"
"If they do not wish to speak of their prophecy, it matters not. We know what we need to know."
“Come, I will take you to the saloon. You can rest there until nightfall.”
~
In the darkness of Malus’ infamous great city, deep within a castle wall, creatures scuttled about in the shadows. A mechanical bug crawled along the walls, reaching a man and hissing into his ear. The man paused, patiently listening. Entering a private chamber, his voice echoed in a loud whisper. The man himself was nearly a silhouette of a man, a terrible tall blackness covered in robes and with crimson eyes. “Your brother has slithered his way into Malus it seems.”
"I was wondering when Prama would make the mistake of following that vessel into this realm." Dhakk was as studious as always, surrounded by books. He was looking for a way to rid himself of this earthly host and return to the heavens beside of his beloved Kaksa. Even after all this time, he still longed to be by her side, even if she did prefer his brother. She would never give Prama a second thought after he wiped his brother's existence from history.
Even in candle light, the shadow man was still pure blackness as he walked closer. He more of a shape, he had two horns that helped with a frightful appearance. “The Shadow Sage has also finally come to Malus.”
"Ah... now that is an interesting revelation." Dhakk actually looked up from his book, those glowing turquoise eyes seemingly amused. "The vessel was chosen as the Shadow Sage. Maybe the spirits took pity on her plight."
“There are many of us who wish to use her. Our master wants to make you a deal, Destroyah.” The whisper was like a lullaby to the gods ears.
"I usually do not deal with messengers." Dhakk returned his gaze to his books. "If your master wants a deal, then he can ask me in person."
A pause, for a moment, and the air turned to a chill. “I am asking you.” The candle lights went out, with only the glow of each others eyes in the room giving away the terror both could give. “You deal with an avatar of my will. It’s taxing to make one. You have my respect Dhakk that I let you communicate with one. I know you can be respectful yourself.”
"... a fragment, that you are. But part of Chaos nonetheless." Dhakk still did not look too interested. "What business do you want with me? If you are looking for a way to get to Kaksa, then you're out of luck. I'm sure you heard about her little fit when she tossed my brother and I from the heavens."
“She helped Hylia sever me from my power as well. A power I’m well on my way from achieving once more.” The shadow wisped around the room, holding Dhakk’s shoulders lightly. “What if I helped you gain revenge on your brother in exchange for helping me in return?” His whisper was alluring to listen to. “You keep the snake, and I get what I want from the woman.”
"Tempting. Dare I ask how you plan to achieve this?" Dhakk wanted more details. "Bound to his host or not, my brother Prama is still a very powerful being. How do you plan to enact this 'revenge'? I care not of the woman."
“The woman holds a powerful piece of my essence locked within her. If you complete a ritual to bring this being out of her, you will summon forth a demon to surpass Demise. Alone, it would rip apart the physical fabric of your brother. With you, there’d be no struggle from your brother to be had. From there, he is a soul, and a soul can be scattered, trapped, or lost to time and space. And I know something else that would entice you.”
"As I said before, tempting, but what could be better than gloating as Prama is ripped into a thousand pieces?"
“Hurting those he cares about.” The red eyes glew as the whisper grew insidious. “How he hurt you in taking away your love from you. You can take away the friendships he has. You can make him a failure before you rip him to pieces. Make his friends suffer; make him powerless to stop it.”
"That sounds like a glorious bit of destruction that is making me twitch in anticipation." Dhakk chucked with a sinister grin. "I don't suppose you had a few of these friends in mind?"
“The woman Leere needs to suffer for the ritual to be completed. I know Bonegrinder cares for her the most. Do anything you desire to her, so long as she feels every pain. There is also a subordinate of his known as Black in Malus with them. A Wraith, but he can be made to experience pain. I will lead them to the capital, from there your followers and mine will separate them. With enough time, the woman will unleash the Demon, and I will give it strength to kill your brother, but not before he wallows in the agonizing torment of having lost his friends.”
"Hrm... suffering can be physical or mental. Perhaps a mixture of both would work." Dhakk then was surprised to learn of a Wraith. He always thought of Black as an undead puppet. This was certainly interesting news. "Prama's demise will lead Kaksa right back into my arms. Though, I must say, I am rather curious as to why you'd want to help me. After all, Prama and I helped Kaksa lock you away all those years ago. Do you just want to claim this world as your own? Something that is yours, perhaps?"
“I want the bodies of the mortals that Hylia loved to pile up. That’ll be a start. And I live in the moment. I’m adaptable Dhakk.” The shadow danced around to face the god directly. “We have a deal?”
"Very well. We have a deal." Dhakk agreed with the avatar of Chaos. "So... when do I start?"
Teufel’s shadow man shook his hand, his eyes flickering in and out. The Devil had made his contract. “Now.”
The World felt out of balance. Leere was so weak, her mind spinning back into consciousness. The first thing she felt was a stinging sensation in her wrists. Her arms were being held up by a chain, with torturous cuffs digging into her wrists to keep her hands together. She could barely have to strength to move her legs. When she did, she discovered that she could, the Mortuus woman felt a draft. Was she naked? She didn’t have her robes. They at least took her coat and shirt off. Maybe her pants were taken too. She was too numb to tell. Even moving slightly, she grimaced at the immediate pain that followed in her wrists. Blood dripped from her fingers to the floor, and Leere finally saw the pentagram that’s surrounded her. “Oh god.”
Looking around her, there were four obelisks, and straight ahead, the Destroyer himself.
"What? Going to call out to my brother now?" Destroyer was occupied finishing the text on the Obelisks for the ritual. His own claws were digging out the symbols from the stone. All this death and decay and he did not even flinch. "Go ahead. Prama's host is rather busy right now, so I highly doubt he'll come running. Though there's plenty of other deities or spirits or whatever you wish to call them to cry to as well. Makes this so much more fun." He then said, "Better yet, why not ask Tzitzmime to have mercy on you? Perhaps he'll be in a good mood today."
“What do you think you’re doing to me?” Leere sounded tired, mostly because she was, but she still had spunk in her voice.
"I'm simply preparing a feast for Tzitzmime." Destroyer answered as his tail then started to draw a line to connect the Obelisks. He walked the pentagram, making sure everything was in place. After this was finished, he could see Kaksa once more. It would be him and her for all eternity. "I have to be a good host now, don't I?"
Leere grimaced, feeling the tattoo on her back vibrate very slowly. “You want to unleash the horror in me, don’t you? Why?” She looked up bitterly into the eyes of the god. “What can you possibly gain from it?”
"I get the pleasure of seeing that snake wail at the realization of he can't save you." Destroyer had a disturbing grin creeping across his visage. "And relish in Prama's failure. The Anagari will come slithering, trying to be your 'knight in scale-covered armor', and risk exposing Prama. When the fool does, I'll be able to rip my brother from the Anagari's body." He held up his razor sharp claws. "Interesting biological component of these Drakkan. They can use the most ancient of all magic... soul magic. Transfer the very essence of a living creature. With the Anagari so weak, I will be able to use this energy I have saved for hundreds of years to end my brother."
Leere felt hope slipping away. Was this the end of her life’s journey? To fail spectacularly?
No.
Even if she was, she wasn’t going to sink into despair. She still had her grit and her spirit. And she wouldn’t die letting him have emotional satisfaction. “Too bad that as a Drakken you look like an ass. Can’t imagine you can get laid either. I mean, it would be the most logical conclusion. You could never get your claws on your precious Kaksa. So why this life too?” When Leere saw him twitch, she smiled evilly best she could. “I bet your brother fucked her good. They were lovers after all. And even as a snake, he’s still a charming lover. I should know. I bet you can’t even pronounce sex you pathetic, little man. Must be why Kaksa didn’t love you. You’re so little.”
Destroyer did not like her speaking of Balance in such a way. No mere human could understand his story. It was just the three of them for eons. She would give her love to Maker and to him equally. Though for the longest time, maybe just a year or maybe a millennium, she did not return to his side and he despaired. What did his brother have that he did not? Was it because he was of the dark? Was all darkness considered bad? No one would ever know or comprehend, even it if would be a relief to share his frustration.
"Insult me all you wish; it will not change your fate. I'm not stupid like my brother. I will not act upon emotions."
“Fool. You might not be emotional, but you are stupid if you think killing me will bring you any closer to your precious Kaksa.”
"Oh, I know it won't. Killing my brother will." Destroyer seemed so bitter towards Maker. "But killing you will be fun."
Now within range of her face, Leere spat a hunk of saliva into his eye. “How’s that for fun?”
"... I was going to start with your finger nails, though I suppose I could begin with a tongue or your eye."
Leere cracked her finger best she could with the cuffs on. “Do your worst.”
Destroyer was by no means ever merciful. He started with Leere's painted finger nails, removing them one by one. Sometimes, on purpose, he'd leave half of a nail and deem he made an error and had to take off the rest as well just to spite her. Then, he worked on her toes. Before long, all of her nails were decorating the floor. When that pain was not enough to rouse the demon from slumber, he decided to try a different type of torment. Over and over, she was made to watch the death of her loved ones.
Every nail broken off was a spurt of blood. Pain became an abundance to Leere. This commodity was fuel to four obelisks in the room, syphoning it from her.
When the mental torment of her family came, and in raw creative ways, Leere wanted it to come to an end. Seeing Rinku, Zelda, Covarog, Sunny, and all the others suffer and day was agonizing. “Fuck. You!”
"Seriously, is that the best insult you can do? So often it is used, never followed up on. Not my type, for sure." Destroyer held up a large pair of rusty scissors. "I wonder how much more it will take for you to break."
“You. Can’t. Break me.” Leere was breathing heavily to keep her mind relatively sane.
"Are you sure about that?" Destroyer nearly chuckled at her defiant attitude. "You're not the first that I've tortured and won't be the last. Many of your fellow Mortuus have broken before me. I have pulled horrors that you have never even fathomed from the shadows that my brother tossed aside."
“Vile beast. You lost before for a reason. You will do so again...”
As Destroyer was ready to continue, two robed figures with grey feathery wings floated down next to Leere. Putting two bracelets and a crown of fangs on her, they started to chant an unknown language. The Shadow man whispered gently into the Destroyers ear. “Your brother draws near. You and your minions must stop him and the wrath from interfering. When my other half is freed, my connection to this avatar will be lost. But make no mistake, I am coming here to see my work complete.”
"So… he is coming..." Destroyer sounded most amused. "I was rather uncertain of whether he would or not. Or perhaps, is it the creature that is coming for the 'tiny princess' he holds so dear? Oh well, the snake did try to warn her. Prama probably showed him all of what was to be seen of her fate."
The two-winged cultists started to chant. From outside a dome surrounding Leere, others gathered from Mortuus to monsters chanted in a hellish pray. The bracelets on Leere’s arms sparked on, and the crown on her head sunk into her skull. As Leere was shocked, and the fangs on her head sunk deeper, a terrible scream radiated outwards.

A flash of white. A void of emptiness. It was so white. It had no sound, no image, no feeling. In the distance, Leere saw a figure holding themselves close. They were a shaky silhouette. Turning with white eyes, it flickered. Leere’s soul flickered. It was time. It was the end.

All over the Tower of Death, Bonegrinder and Black had teleported, hoping to find Leere. However, like a signal bouncing around, they couldn’t lock onto her easily. Just as they were giving up hope, they saw a flashing pillar of blue light. Eager cultists were running forward, and as they stepped into the light, they were flown upwards into a glowing hole in the roof.
"It's started..." Bonegrinder felt a sense of dread tighten in his chest. "We are too late..."
"... is there any chance we can still save her?"
"If the demon doesn't consume her, then perhaps we can. You must be ready to fight."
"I always am."
Behind them, coming out of the wall as if being birthed from it, the Abomination was still giving chase. All six eyes board in on them. They had two choices. Run up the beam, or stay and fight.
"This thing just doesn't give up." Black sounded irritated.
"A Hellspawn of the Second Ring of Hell never stops." Bonegrinder slithered as fast as he could, going up the beam with Black right alongside him. "Personally, he detests the ones of the First Ring the most."
"And that's not a First?"
"No, if a Nameless was here, we'd both be in trouble."
"Hey, I thought you knew all sorts of magic."
"He does."
"So just magic it away."
"Only the one who calls the demon can do that. Or a Summoner."
"... great."
The ‘Angel’ drew close. Its six clawed talons suddenly glew a menacing purple, and it drove them at Black. As one nicked him, a deep sickness flew through the Wrath. Something that shouldn’t be possible was.
It was as if Black was suddenly paralyzed. He could not move and slammed harshly into the ground. Groaning, the Wraith tried to will his body to function, but he could not do so. Even lifting a finger was unsuccessful. As the creature tried to descend upon him, Bonegrinder's huge tail whacked the fiend away. Snarling at the demon, the Anagari maneuvered the Wraith onto his coils, out of harm's way. "You won't interfere." The Anagari curled the tip of his tail around the fiend's ankle and crushed it with a sickening snap. With that, it stopped its movements. For now.
As Bonegrinder and Black flew up the beam, they gave themselves ample time to flee as the Abomination recovered. It was a silent trip up, every second filling with more and more dread. At the top, they found themselves on the outside of a dome. Inside, Leere was floating upwards now. The Obelisk was burning bright with energy. Suddenly, complete nothing filled the ears of all in witness. It was then the Obelisk fired out a beam, killing all the cultists who wished to be sacrificed. Leere was flipped over with her back exposed. The tattoo on her back was glowing, with blood pouring onto the ground below. Outside the dome a whirlwind was starting to storm, red blood sky being torn by the wind. The final step to the ritual began.
Bonegrinder had managed to use a touch of Prama's magic to undo the effect of the fiend's poisoning on Black. The Wraith could now move again, but felt like he was dragging. There was hardly any energy for him to spare. He would be of no use fighting hardly. As the demonic magic started to fill the air, the Anagari nearly panicked. This was not supposed to be happening. He gently set down Black on a high ledge, hopefully to protect him from danger and rushed forward. Slamming his fists on the dome, he repeatedly struck at the structure.
"YOU LET HER GO!!!" He bellowed. "You want this snake!!! Come get him! You leave her out of it!!! Dhakk!!! He knows you hear him!!!"
"Ah, dear brother, you finally arrive to show!" Destroyer was on the other side of the dome completing his work. "A little late, as always, but better than never."
"He is here! You release her! This snake has seen a thousand deaths and he refuses to see another!"
"It seems Prama is still silent? Too cowardly to come and face me?" Destroyer played dumb, tapping his chin with a single finger. "Or perhaps... he's still not at his full power?"
"You are not capable of your full abilities either, Dhakk!" Bonegrinder snapped at him. "That will not happen until the day of prophecy!"
"Oh, you and that stupid prophecy, do you honestly believe Balance will come after Prama? After me? It's nonsense."
"You know she will! She is the Mother Goddess! She will strike down Chaos and restore harmony to the world!"
"Not if I can help it. This world will be consumed by Chaos and with you out of the way, Balance and I can live peacefully without the hassle of meddling affairs of a mortal world in the void."
From outside the dome, waking through the storm, a familiar voice shouted out to them. Sheer-Khan trotted through the bellowing wind, slowly making his way to the Hive leader. “Bonegrinder! We must abandon our station here! Open a portal to Hyrule! We must flee, now!”
"Kit!!!" Bonegrinder was relieved to see that Hades was still here. He had sensed his life was still there, but it was so hard to know for sure in this cursed land. "He is so glad to see you! Please, help him break through! Leere needs us! If the ritual is completed, then Tzitzmime will have another part of his whole joined!"
Lightning crackled, and Hades gently laid a hand on Bonegrinder’s shoulder. “She is lost. But we might be able to rally the rest of Hyrule’s Warriors. You must hurry. You are the only one able to open a portal home.”
"He cannot leave her!!! Don't you understand, Kit?! She's a key! If this is completed, Chaos can take hold of the world before he is scheduled to do so!" Bonegrinder pleaded with Hades. "Help this old snake stop the ritual! There is still time! He can suppress the demon!"
As Bonegrinder turned to break down the dome, Hades grabbed his massive metal club. With a sigh, he swung two critical blows. One strike struck Black. The force of the swing against a body his size made him fly high into the storm as if he was nothing more than an ace in the hole. The second blow was brought down on Bonegrinder’s head, caving in his skull, his brain, and his spinal cord. The concentrated explosion tore down the rest of his nerves along his massive coil. Hades sighed, carefully holding down Bonegrinder’s body. “.... You forced my hand. You stupid bastard. I didn’t want it to come to this. You should have listened to your heart and never should have come here. Now I have to play this disgusting role to its fullest depravity.”
Black had tried to rush forward to save Bonegrinder but Hades had swatted him away. The storm picked up the Wraith and threw him around, but he was still conscious. Finally, Black was able to grab onto a tower's spire and managed to climb inside. He was still here. He would find his way back to his master.
Bonegrinder, however, was out cold. Not moving. But still alive due to the deity inside of him.
“I know you can hear me, you wretched god. This is your doing. You denied me my most simple request. You brought my friend here. You allowed the gods and goddesses to fall out of Balance. My friend could have waited in the Hive while the world was recreated in blissful ignorance. But no. Now I must ensure he stays down for this.” Leere gurgled, a small cry leaving her throat, the Obelisk shining a light on her. Great new lengths had been taken to bring new conditions for the ritual, but it was finally done.
Bonegrinder was a creature of magic and violence when he desired. Sometimes, mere mistaken words or a careless action might agitate him into a rage. Many thought it was due to his split personality. The Anagari showed the side of his usual self, 'Modoc', and then other times, the true, cruel nature of 'Bonegrinder'. Yet, those who knew him throughout the years, had learned that he was one not to mess with or else there would be consequences. There was very little patience in the Anagari except for those he held dear.
Prama, for all his glory and splendor, had no patience. With Bonegrinder's mind silent from the blow to the head, the deity took over his host's body. The divinity inside of him was much stronger and could use his strength through the Anagari's body... but with some consequences for his host later. It was not an action he did often. Those large coils curled around Hades' body and one large hand snatched at the Lynel's throat. "Treacherous creature..." Prama's voice held no love for the creation of Dhakk. In full control, the Anagari's body was radiating powerful celestial magic, floating in particles around the snake. His eyes were glowing white, narrowed and angry. He always thought Lynels were rather haughty. And then one made the mistake of striking his host. "I will scald you into ash."
Hades opened his mouth, blasting the god in the face. His arms still free to move, he brought the power down on the body once more. “You could have resurrected my species! Instead you told me that they should stay dead. A being of creation too spineless to create! You should never have inhabited Modoc’s body!”
Squeezing tighter and tighter with the Anagari's coils, Prama did not let go. The deity did not feel pain. This was not his true body. His magic kept healing the damage. Returning a blow of his own to Hades' face, he kept repeating the same move, punch after strike after blow. "All things come to an end, and my brother is the one who decides that." Prama spat at Hades. "If you're angry about it, argue with him, not me. You should be grateful that the snake took you in, looked after you. Who else would have done so with a despicable species such as yourself?"
“You brought all his pain upon him. You... you alone.” Unlike the god, Sheer-Khan could not regenerate. The feline’s face looked like a tumour by the time that Prama was done. “Modoc would have... helped me. Now watch as you fail....” Before the Lynel went limp, he pointed to Leere.

Agony and suffering radiated through every nerve of Leere. Chanting echoed in the chamber, and brimstone sizzled from her back. With an explosion of blood and flesh, Leere’s eyes rolled back. From the pentagram on her back, something crawled out. The moment it did, two things happened. The night sky itself cracked open, bleeding the heavens. The second was that the sail of a baby rang out to all who heard it. As Leere fell to the ground, a little pinkish piece of flesh crawled on the ground. It had the upper body of a baby with its eyes sewn shut. Its lower body was a slug, flapping back and forth like a fish out of water. Every wail was cosmic torture to the ears. Schwanz des Teufels: Tyrannin was reborn into the mortal world.
Teufel is not the sort of being to have made friends. The closest thing he could that could be identified would be an ally. But to someone as powerful, as xenophobic, and as vile as him, most others would be considered pawns. All except for perhaps two people.
The first would be the Destroyer God Dhakk. To Teufel, while Dhakk is someone he can see that he can manipulate, the God of Destruction’s own personality and philosophies often coincide with Teufel’s own. Perhaps, also, Teufel knows that Dhakk is smart enough to not trust him completely, which has gained the devil’s respect. In the small windows of planning together, or bringing about strife on mortal kind, there is a flicker of emotion that Teufel doesn’t quite understand trying light in him. Teufel doesn’t allow these emotions to grow.
On the other spectrum, from a side of complete obsession with toying with, is Klinge. Teufel has been impressed by how much suffering the Gerudo had gone through, irritated by having lost to him when Mablung was first alive, then more than happy to continue tormenting the Gerudo when Teufel was freed from his imprisonment. Teufel finds destiny to be a concept that is beneath him, yet when he found out that Klinge, now taking on the name Malik, had taken possession of the Triforce of Power, he couldn’t help but laugh at the cosmic coincidence bringing them close together again. In all of Teufel’s sick ideas on what makes mortal’s pleasurable, Klinge has to be his favourite. If not to see how far the Gerudo can bend before being broken.
