I think I can give you a good answer to your chicken questions!
Its very difficult to rehome chickens, esp if you live in an urban area and your birds are adults, and ESPECIALLY roosters. There's no way to know how a new flock will react to new birds (and vice versa,) it can be stressful for your birds and the existing flock, transporting adult chickens safely is difficult, and there really aren't a lot of sanctuaries or shelters that'll take poultry, especially in more urban areas. Humanely slaughtering them and eating them ensures they have a good QOL up to the end, endure no stress, and you get a good meal out of it!
Killing chickens you no longer can or want to take care of and eating them is a perfectly reasonable way to completely control how and where they go and see to it that they go peacefully.
Thank you for the reassurance. From the information everyone's given, it seems like the solution itself isn't inhumane (and I do agree!) it's just the extenuating circumstances that make it uncomfortable for us. I feel a little relieved knowing it's a valid option, now I'm just reconciling the timing of it.
