ICEPUNK (arctic internet) mixtape, 2011/2026
◮◮◮❅ ❄ A Lonely Ice Lab in a Boreal Forest: Frigid Research ❄ ❅◮◮◮
unofficial mixtape v.1.2 by Tim Sliwinski
icepunk is an obscure “frozen” microgenre, born and quietly erased during the post–witch house moment of 2011. Emerging around the era of a Balam Acab album, it later partially dissolved into seapunk, while remaining tied to a distinct visual aesthetic (@c0ld1995). In the 2020s, related terms surfaced - frutiger glacier, cyber glacier, digital winter - all circling the same icepunk idea.
Sonically, icepunk feels like extraterrestrials landing in the Arctic/tundra: mystical, unfamiliar, and quietly futuristic. Ambient, watery, minimal tracks shaped its core, infused with fragments of tundra tribal rhythms and elements of witch house, glitch hop, leftfield, epic collage, progressive electronic, and dub. The approach was loose and unsystematic, yet nearly every fragment carries a sense of cold, Arctic emptiness, and the atmosphere of its time.
