Postcards from Snagglepuss

So what was Christmas like among a diver's camp, and in the Bahamas even?

Rather interesting, to say the least.

Thankfully, the Jolly Roger's galley managed to survive intact in its new incarnation as the Diver's Delight, mobile headquarters of the Peter Potamus Magic Divers ... and it wasn't just the tradition-bound turkey and trims.

Conch stew, in a Bahamanian manner (Peter even picking up the recipe from contacts in Nassau), served as the appetizer course, with a little preparatory help from Wally Gator, Ol' Chuckleberry "himself," and yours truly. And what could get oh so aromatically tasty waiting for the turkey (and presumably, you're probably obvious about what such is bound to entail).

But still, even considering the Bahamas' British associations, never mind its independence in 1973, it was felt interesting to have some plum pudding in the classical English manner for the dessert. Steamed, even, right down to the brandy butter.

All in all, just filling enough to recognise that we were a little too full to go diving afterward, instead resting things off until sunset, when some rather lively snorkelling as the reef goes into the evening mode of such blacklit-looking wonder prevailed. What could have rounded out Christmas Day among a diver's camp all the better?

At any rate, ye of the Hanna-Barbera persuasion, Snagglepuss would just like to use this chance opportunity to thank all of you taking stock of this now-twice-weekly feature of mine, enjoying such exploits fresh and wonderful bound to happen to such a nicer, if klutzy, mountain lion, laid-back Southern-type hound ... and the friends who manage to tag along.

As well as this blog whence these escapades appear, wherein much in the way of Hanna-Barbera Fandom is laid evident; I certainly hope you keep making such a welcoming part of the Hanna-Barberian experiences you manage to keep in your routine.

"Thank you for your support," even ... and 2024 promises much in the way of further escapades. Especially as this year sees its tenth anniversary therefor, even!

Tell me this isn't the sort of boathouse that The Three Wolves could imagine renting by some lakeside for a diving vacation:

Could you picture Peter Potamus' Magic Divers pulling off a dive session at--

(Otherwise known as Big Bear Lake, with the motoboats a-puttin' ...)

So picture a dive pontoon with the Three Wolves aboard same for a few days' diving vacation in a milieu such as this:

"Hello, boys ..."

Such was the greeting of Harmony Wolf, romantic interest and girlfriend unto Hokey Wolf, as she stood in the shallows of that lake in northern Minnesota whence The Three Wolves were holding court in a diver's camp on a somewhat foggy, and at once muggy, summer's morning, directed unto Bon-Bon (nephew of Loopy De Loop) and Ding-a-Ling (son-in-law of Hokey Wolf) in full SCUBA regalia of the highest order.

"And let me guess," Harmony added. "I see we have designs on an early-morning dive."

"More like a sunrise dive, Harmony," was how Ding-a-Ling responded.

To which Bon-Bon responded, "I have to admit the mugginess of the weather of late made it rather trying to sleep the last couple nights."

"I was guessing as much," Harmony remarked. (And if you asked, she was also in the SCUBA getup, and in her birthday suit more or less.) "Care to join me in a dive before breakfast?"

"We were thinking along those same lines, Harmony," was how Ding-a-Ling put it, with Bon-Bon in agreement.

"I can just sense how excited you wolf pups are to get diving," Harmony remarked as she led the Divin' Wolf Pups to a modest drop-off in the lake where the dive would commence. And even if the outside seemed a little foggy looking from the mugginess, the lake's waters themselves seemed remarkably clear, not to mention bracing in contrast to what was otherwise ensuing. And as if that weren't enough to make the dive fascinating enough, the GoPro lighting mounted on their foreheads helped make things a little more brilliant in the early-morning lake's depths.

Even if the lake was some 30 feet deep maximum, the sheer sensation of kneeling upon the lake bottom of somewhat powdery-feeling sand couldn't have been something of a treat, especially with Harmony Wolf's hugging both the divers as a way of showing gratitude for getting them in the dive that morning. (Even at the expense of feeling aroused between the legs with soft erections such as Harmony didn't seem to mind; they were just growing wolf pups, anyway, and it's obviously natural for them to sense such feelings at their age.)

Yet when it came to breakfast that morning, Loopy, Hokey and Mildew couldn't have been more bemused at just how it was possible that Bon-Bon and Ding-a-Ling could actually have the stamina to dive well before breakfast notwithstanding sheer sleeplessness in the wake of ongoing muggy weather. As Bon-Bon explained it, "I have to admit it, Uncle Loopy ... Ding and I felt just so sleepless in this heat that maybe we felt like diving in around sunrise."

"And I just decided to step in and surprise them on the side," was how Harmony Wolf added to the explanation.

"Can she dive rather well, OR WHAT?" was how Mildew Wolf commented on the whole over a second helping of waffles. Harmony, for her part, just gave a wink and a nod as if seeking to concur.

As Top Cat and clowder return from another diver's holiday with the Catalina Diving Clowder on Catalina ...

This could be considered the gist of a conversation, debriefing even, between Top Cat and his clowder on board one of the Catalina Express boats heading back to Long Beach following a recent diving excursion and romantic weekend with the Catalina Diving Clowder, itself my own Hanna-Barbera-influenced creation, on--naturally--Catalina Island. Basically, they're summarising the single most unforgettable moment with such member of the Clowder they were assigned to sleep with.

Benny the Ball: Perhaps his pet moment was in getting ready for the early-morning dive at the Casino Point Dive Park with Jessamaine, his companion on Catalina; Jessamaine was heard suggesting to Benny that his fins may have been a bit tacky, but cool-looking nonetheless.

Choo-Choo: Romance (howbeit borderline unlikely) came upon his mind in bedding with Lola, being caught by surprise to hear a passing thunderstorm over Avalon the second night and trying to sleep, unaware that Chooch and Lola were rather close in bed as if attempting some feline lovemaking in the Catalina fashion.

Fancy-Fancy: Assigned Jayne as his sleepover companion, the quasi-Lothario of the TC clowder managed to allow his swagger to show (with the Diving Clowder pretty much apologetic for it) during a dive session close to Toyon Bay, replete with much in the way of his brand of passionate hugging and kissing taken underwater directed at Jayne. Back on the Clowder's dive boat, Jayne admittedly felt surprised at Fancy-Fancy's advances and his passion taken to such depths, but acknowledged that it was just Fancy-Fancy all along.

Brain: With Samantha as sleepover partner, TC's most loyal feline couldn't help but resist doing as much the "wolf whistle" both when Samantha was assigned the "cherchez le merchat" act during a dive session off Ben Weston Point--and when Brain somehow decided to join Samantha in the mermaid getup during the ensuing dive.

Spook: For sheer wonderment in the diving experience, Joleen (to whom Spook was assigned bed share) admitted that during the time off Two Harbors, off Isthmus Cove even, Spook may have been on a par with the clownfish in some of the rock reefs so dived unto--as a sheer comic wit.

Top Cat: Always given the sleepover with the Diving Clowder's leader, "Bubbles," TC's finest moment was helping out in the kitchen ahead of the welcoming supper, particularly in getting the shrimp lo mein started and getting the table set. "And need I add, boys, how romantic Bubbles can get to be sleeping with her, especially with the underwater fantasies we manage to share with each other!"

During a recent dive holiday vis-a-vis Top Cat's clowder and the Catalina Diving such

[Mise en scene: Following the traditional welcoming seafood supper on the first evening, whence the divers and guests are situated in the Diving Clowder's living room with substantial picture window looking upon Avalon Bay and the Pacific.]

TOP CAT, as stentorian as usual in the Sgt. Bilko vein: Alright boys, pay attention ... this is where we'll be assigning who sleeps with who during this dive vacation with our feline dive hosts! As per usual, the Clowder's head diver, Bubbles--

"BUBBLES" "herself:" That's me, bhoyz!

TOP CAT, continuing: --will be sleeping with yours truly, but as for yourselves--and don't get your hopes up too high, especially Chooch and Fancy--we'll draw from my lucky hat here [displaying the hat] who sleeps with who while we're here on The Magic Isle ... so let's shake up the hat [filled with slips containing the names of the Clowder's fellow divers] and get to the draw!

[Following a short shake and stir-around of the slips, TC passes the hat around for the assignments, starting with--]

TOP CAT: Benny, why don't you start the draw here?

[Whereupon Benny the Ball reaches into the hat and draws--]

BENNY THE BALL, childishly as ever: "Samantha"--

SAMANTHA: So, Benny ... what does it feel like to sleep with me tonight?

BENNY THE BALL, somewhat nervous: Uh ... what did you have in mind?

SAMANTHA: Plenty of interesting diving fantasies worth sharing!

[Which gets Benny giddy as the hat passes to Choo-Choo, ever the clueless girl-crazy one, and Chooch draws--]

CHOO-CHOO, nervously: "Lola--"

LOLA, somewhat seductlvely: Hello, Chooch!

CHOO-CHOO, slightly matter-of-fact: I just hope things aren't going to go too far when we're in bed, and we discuss diving dreams all the more!

[Whereupon Choo-Choo and Lola kiss, much to the surprise and amusement of all for one who more often than not winds up unlucky in love. The hat moves on to Fancy-Fancy, more or less TC's resident Lothario, who ends up drawing--]

FANCY-FANCY, reading the slip: "Jayne--"

JAYNE, purring her way into an otherwise budding romance: Oooooohhhhh, I've heard much about you, Fancy-Fancy!

FANCY-FANCY, excited at what must be ensuing: And who hasn't, especially with such diving here in Catalina!

TOP CAT, taking note: Not bad, Fancy-Fancy, but still, try and save your diving dreams and fantasies for the sleepover parts! Now, we've got Brain and Spook to get assigned; Brain will draw next--

[At any rate, the ever-clueless Brain draws--]

BRAIN, reading the slip in his ever-dopey-sounding voice: "Jolene--"

JOLENE, coming over and stroking Brain's face, hugging him even, after Snagglepuss: Now this has got to be SOMETHING we can look forward to, especially when we go diving this weekend!

BRAIN, somehow lightened up at her sight: You really MEAN it, Jolene?!!

JOLENE, getting matter-of-fact about it: After all, who as get assigned to join me as much sleeping as diving can't resist such a wonderful diving queen?

BRAIN, tickled at the observation: Geez, I must be blushing!!!

TOP CAT: At any rate, Spook's left, and as a result, he gets Jessamaine as his partner! [Whereupon Jessamaine approaches and caresses Spook in affectation, Spook reciprocating.]

SPOOK, somewhat surprised: Uh, like, can I call you simply "Jess"?

JESSAMAINE: That's alright by me, Spook!

SPOOK: And what sort of diving fantasies are we bound to share?

JESSAMAINE: Let's just say--quite a few!

[Which certainly brought both clowders down in laugher as the early-evening sun went into sunset mode in the blue Pacific's waters by the island town of Avalon beside the bay, followed not long afterwards by some tea and exchange of diving stories to "break the ice" for the night ahead]

Poetry Corner

So just picture the dilemma facing The Three Wolves (as in Loopy De Loop, Hokey Wolf and Mildew Wolf) when they're probably out on a diver's holiday.

The dilemma being one of trying to stay clean and sweet without risking wolf fur winding up down the drain and clogging up the sewer system at the cabin they're staying in.

Even with the likelihood of such being connected to a septic tank out in the backyard, requiring the old Roebic just to ensure everything's in proper running order.

Or even being in a scenario where use of soap or body wash is strongly discouraged to avoid polluting lakes and streams for risk of worsening algae blooms in the end.

Ergo: Could it be possible that the diving experiences that the Three Wolves have among themselves are deemed cleansing of their lupine fur in and of themselves?

The very possibility, considering that such avoids soap and maximises quality time in the water, might likely be the best possible choice in the circumstance to hand.

(Though you never can tell.)
