As I mentioned in my previous post, I finally had the opportunity to see Hamilton this past Saturday. Honestly - I am still speechless. For those of you who have seen the show, you know how overwhelming it is. For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, it is difficult to put into words what experiencing it is really like.
On the surface, it is a history lesson - a fun, catchy and exciting reminder of the origins of our country and all that has always been at stake for us as a nation. When you dig a little deeper, you begin to experience Lin-Manuel Miranda’s BRILLIANT music and lyrics (and I do mean BRILLIANT!). Beyond that are the MANY messages and themes woven into and throughout the story: courage, persistence, strength, facing fear, facing the unimaginable, forgiveness, love, perseverance, commitment, dedication, fighting for freedom and justice, the list goes on and on.
It’s a lot to take in - believe me, I know. That being said, the show is EXQUISITE. It is a perfect expression of everything that it means to be human; it’s an added bonus that it’s a historical accounting of our country’s origin and history.
You may be asking yourself, “Is it really worth all the hype?” I can assure you that, YES, it is worth all that “hype”, and then some!! One of the most extraordinary things about Hamilton (and the thing I love the MOST about the show), is its extremely diverse cast. Every race, every color, every cultural background, and every gender are represented fully on that stage - show after show, night after night. It is a true representation of the America I have loved all my life and STILL believe in. We are a nation, founded by immigrants - created in an effort to be free from oppressive rule.
Quite honestly, the true heart and message of this show are needed now, more than ever. At a time when this country is SO divided, it was a huge blessing to be part of a night of theater that brings us all together - and reminds us that (nearly) all of us have emigrated here from somewhere else. Our diversity is our strongest asset as a nation. Instead of being fearful of what is unfamiliar to us, we can choose to be curious and ask questions. Instead of judgmental, we can choose to be open-minded and accepting. Instead of angry and hateful, we can choose to be loving.
