Did you ever wonder what Victorian women used for lipstick?

They used this stuff—alkanet root!

Well, actually, they made DIY tinted lip balm with alkanet root to make it red. Most make up was DIY until the 1910s and 1920s. Women used what was available to them or what they could procure from apothecaries—in secret, of course; it was scandal for a lady to be seen buying or wearing make up; the trick was to be subtle.

Anyways, here’s how to make it!

First you steep the root in oil. Any oil will do, especially almond or jojoba. Steep it for at least three days.

After this, you boil the root and oil over a low flame for half an hour.

Then take it off the heat and strain. This is what it should look like:

Now I used 8 tablespoons of oil, so I’ll give the amounts for that. But if you want to make a smaller batch, just divide the other measurements.

Pour the strained oil back into the pot. Heat it up.

Then add the following:

Three teaspoons of cocoa butter, or similar.

Optionally, a few drops of scented oil. I used lavender.

Once the mix is good and hot, add 4 teaspoons of beeswax.

Melt it all together and then take it off the heat. Pour it into some clean jars, pots, pill boxes, or compacts. Let it cool off.

And then you’re done! Authentic Victorian lip tint with natural ingredients.
