I’m so tired and my neck hurts and I want a shower but:

Thorn, tracking test 4 rating: good. Thorn struggled with starting in the face of hundreds and hundreds of sheep coming over to see if were are feeding them. He had a really nice stretch then struggled in the face of some roos. Another nice stretch then struggled at the sight of distant cars. Then honed in. It would have been a lower mark but he did go above and beyond in finding every single article. I think Thorn is feeling confused and demotivated from the lack of live tracks lately. So will have to organise with other people to set up some short sweet love tracks to motivate him again. I also haven’t done a lot of tracking training with Thorn, letting his innate instincts do a lot of work. But now it is time to set up some structured simulations to let him learn how to puzzled out those scenarios.

Thyme, tracking test 9 rating: good

Very impressed with Thyme. T9s are fucking hard and he pretty much breezed through it. Our track had been rained on and was on a plateau getting lots of wind. He cut a corner and overshot a couple of others. Quartering widely because of the wind. But he kept a brisk pace and worked hard the whole time. Very efficient. He found all 4 article and did some beautiful back to back acutes. Blind start. Once he gets his T10 that’s it, he won’t be able to track in trials anymore. That will be a shame he does like the challenge compared to the track and search.

Both tracks were in drought-ridden bare paddocks that are basically hard compressed dirt that leaves little disturbance and nothing for the odour to catch on. It is not easy to work on those.

I’ve been helping out for 3 of the 4 days this event is over, camping in the tent with the boys keeping me warm. I’m so tired and I want a shower.

Scientists use a variety of tools to identify where bats go after they leave their summer roost, in hopes of finding where they hibernate so park scientists can assess their vulnerability to White Nose Syndrome (WNS). WNS is a fungal disease that affects bats during hibernation. It is often displayed as a powdery white substance around infected bats’ muzzles and wings. It has killed millions of bats in the US, up to 99% of some populations. In addition to using acoustic detectors and radio telemetry, scientists are partnering with Rogue Detection Teams to use scent-trained dogs to find bat hibernacula (hibernating roosts) at Mount Rainier National Park.

Rogue Detection Teams has worked in other national parks (including Yosemite and Acadia) and other protected areas around the world. Detection dogs are considered a noninvasive tool to survey for wildlife and the trained dogs, who are fetch obsessed, are only interested in the odors they are taught as a means to play fetch.

Training the dogs involves four steps. First, park scientists collect and dehydrated bat guano (bat feces) as well as tiny clippings of bat fur for scent training. The Rogue Detection Team trainers hide these around the landscape and into rock crevasses, mimicking, from the dog's point of view, where the bat hibernacula typically are (scree slopes, rock outcroppings). The dogs are then introduced to the odor of live captured bats (captures are conducted by NPS personnel). The bats are held by trained professionals, the dogs sniff the bat, and are then rewarded immediately afterward with their ball. Naturally deceased and desiccated bats are utilized to spread their odor on rock formations to simulate swarming activity. The final stage is using a "hot spot", or a location in the wild where there is a known population of the target species, to transition the dogs from introduced odors (which have human odor affiliated with it) to locating a bat odor on their own in the wild.

Hey everyone! Ygritte and I wanted to make a sort of PSA since we’ve unfortunately seen a lot of missing posters for dogs in our surrounding communities—

—and whether that’s car-filled (sub)urban or wide open and dangerous in their own ways rural regions, it’s absolutely scary to lose your dog. Cats too, but this fix doesn’t really work for them because of the weight, unless they make much lighter GPS trackers (and they likely will in the future!).

This here is one of those Apple AirTags. Basically a geotag and it goes wherever your dog goes, the battery can usually last a whole year, is easily replaced too, and anyone who finds your dog can actually scan it using an app too! Or their microchip, but that requires your dog to have a microchip and for the person to bring them to the vet to scan the chip.

The absolutely wonderful thing about this AirTag is that it’s real-time tracking, not passive like the above example. You can quite literally open up your Find My iPhone app (or use the website if you have no Apple products other than AirTags—oh, and Tile tags are great too!!!) and see exactly where your doggo is. Or whichever family member constantly gets lost… the possibilities are endless lol.

Mum’s accidentally left Ygritte outside on more than one occasion and usually she doesn’t go far but the one time she did, we just hopped in the car with her leash and then went and fetched her with the convenient app map for the AirTag. This one isn’t mine and is an example, but you get the idea:

As mentioned before, people can use this app to scan AirTags that aren’t even in their circle and it’ll give you just enough info to get it back to the owner without giving out super personal information.

At the start of all this I eyed my dad skeptically, but holy moly this has been the best investment ever and they’re not like… stupidly expensive. I’m totally pulling the card though: if you love your doggo as much as I love mine, please invest in one of these or a similar technology.

Sadly, our escape-prone (on purpose) devil kittens are too tiny (so far) for the AirTag but we’re definitely planning for it when they’re bigger and/or the tech gets smaller.

Real time tracking of your escaped animals is a godsend.

Just please don’t goddamn track your spouses/SOs. There is such a thing as too little trust. But animals can’t exactly look after themselves fully in this situation and rely on us to care for and look for them.
