Excerpt From A Doll Technician's Primer: Chapter XX - Paired Units
...In times of peace, or during extended periods of armistice, the question of what is to be done with remaining Type-Combat (Type-C) Doll units is inevitably considered. Those not undergoing refitting, long term repair, or participating in the revolutionary vanguard are often paired with a Type-Domestic (Type-D) Doll unit; a practice that has returned tangible benefits time and time again.
The most obvious and immediate benefit is reinforcement of party loyalty. By presenting a Type-Combat Doll unit with one of its Type-Domestic Doll counterparts, a face and name is established as a point of personal reference. Through messaging along the lines of "This is what you have been fighting to protect, and you have done such a good job. To her you are a returning hero. This is what the enemy was trying to take from you", the average Type-C unit is 47% less likely to experience anti-revolutionary sentiment or undergo Purpose Degredation, colloquially known as 'cocooning' ("The Moth Process" 79; ch. 5).
The second, but no less important, is to condition the Type-Combat Doll unit to a peacetime environment. It must always be remembered why even in times of peace Type-C units fill out the bulk of the reserve forces; part of their creation, their nature is to expect and thrive in strife (Morgana et al.). A Type-Domestic Doll unit serves as a means of monitoring the Type-C unit's stability, mitigating avoidable incidents or casualty. By that same turn, the Type-D unit serves as a useful gauge to the Type-C unit for their often over-zealous fight response— if the Type-D unit is calm, the current environment and those occupying it are not posing a threat. A one-to-one pairing has proven markedly more effective at preparing a Type-C unit for the comparative lack of hierarchy and regiment that comes with the life of a citizen instead of simply turning them loose onto a still recovering populous.
Paired units will often tailor the details of the pairing to the Dolls' Persona Matrices; most commonly displayed as the 'knight and princess' archetype, the 'siblings' archetype, and the 'lovers' archetype ("Dollmaker's Syllabus", 4th ed.). However, it should be anticipated that a given paired unit may display multiple, or none of these common archetypes. Regardless of the Technician's moralistic opinion on the Doll's dynamic, it is against regulation to attempt direct intervention or influence (Comité National des Autres, June 19XX). At the risk of using personifying language, it is best to consider the selected dynamic as conducive to happy, healthy, and patriotic Doll units.
