AU - Everyone in the Fire Nation is a dragon (with speaking abilities) except for Zuko and Azula who are only part dragon. Ursa raises both of them like a dragon but it’s clear that Azula and Zuko don’t fit in with the rest of the Fire Nation. Then, one day, a bunch of rebels stage an attack against the Fire Nation and Katara and Sokka discover Azula and Zuko, mistaking them both for captured Earth Kingdom humans.

Headcanon - Dragon!Fire Family has races over Caldera. When they’re feeling really competitive, they’ll head to the mountains and race there while doing maneuvers. Ursa has gotten stuck in a cave twice, Zuko once face planted into someone’s garden, and Azula got her tail bitten by an angry animal. Ozai always brags about how he comes out of the races unscathed (until the day he’s attacked by a spider-hornet’s nest).

Azula’s role in Fire Breather AU
After the events of the main plot, the government is still keeping a close eye on Ozai despite setting him free. But he and Ursa still manage to meet up again for old times' sake.
Much to everyone’s surprise, Ursa becomes pregnant again. The first time with Zuko was already a one in one billionth chance. But twice???
The pregnancy was hard, and it was a lot of touch and go, but Ursa and the baby makes it.
Everyone is expecting another dragon-hybrid mutation similar to Zuko. Instead, the baby comes out very human like. Apart from the burning gold eyes and blue scales here and there, the baby is…normal.
(Zuko: How does any of this make sense?!
Ursa: Maybe because Ozai and I tried a different position this time.
Zuko: I’m going to stop you right there.)
Ozai names the baby Azula after his father who also had rare blue scales.
Once she’s old enough, Zuko brings her along sometimes to dragon training sessions with their father. Which mainly involve Ozai letting her play on his hand while he coaches Zuko. He’s very gentle with her.
(Zuko: You’re not going to throw her into a lava pit?
Ozai: You’re never going to let that go, are you?
Zuko: No! That was my favorite hoodie!
Ozai, sighs: Times are changing. There is no need to force her metamorphosis before her time.
Zuko: I guess.
Ozai: …I’m sorry about your… “hoodie”.
Zuko: ...Don’t worry about it.)
Azula loves it when Zuko takes her flying.
As Azula grows, she resembles her human side more. She’s nearly identical to Ursa and loses some scales. The only remaining dragon traits are her eyes and height. (Grows to over six feet).
Azula loves her brother but also envies him. She wants so badly to be a dragon. Dragons aren’t as stigmatized now since the world saw Ozai and Zuko defend the city from other dragons. In vice versa, Zuko envies Azula for being human passing; something he wanted for the longest time. He’s finally accepted his dragon traits and learning to embrace them thanks to Ozai, but it still gets to him sometimes.
Azula bonds with two Kaidas (tiny dragons that have mutualistic relationship with large dragons), Ran and Shaw. They often played with baby Azula whenever she visited Ozai. (Dragons receive Kaidas from their fathers.) Although Azula doesn’t have many scales to clean, they still stay loyal and by her side at all times. Azula passes them off as emotional support ferrets. They do NOT like Druk, Zuko’s Kaida. Lots of hissing and territory spats. (They all love Ursa though).
Azula eventually becomes a White Lotus agent who defends the dragons’ rights from trigger happy government officials. She and Zuko make a good team with her behind the desk and Zuko in the field.
Zuko still takes her flying. Not as much when adults but still every now and then.
Ursa’s karma for all those short jokes.
