I am an urbansketcher since 2009 when I was given the invitation to join a community of like minded people who love to draw or sketch on location. It was this group of people who taught me about tools and materials that I have not imagined myself using. This really opened up my mind to see how the process and not the end result that matters the most in the learning journey of an artist. Eventually I took an interest in drawing subject matters like buildings, urban landscapes, architectural designs and fell in love with sketching shophouses. But nothing beats sketching people. So whenever I have the chance to do so, I would sketch the people around me; in coffeeshops, kopitiams, restaurant, hawker centers and etc. Gradually it becomes a lifestyle of sketching. Sketches like these become a visual journal of my life and what I see and experience, not just as an artist but as a person who is trying to make sense of things. Drawing in general calms my nerves, and slow things down. In this hectic society where everyone is just trying to get things done and moving forward to the next task, it is therefore good to stop and take a step backward and recheck our bearings sometimes, or to pause and ponder, or in army terms, to take a knee and regroup. Doesn't mean you need to be an artist to do this. You can do anything but in my case, drawing is my process of checking myself, when I do things not out of completing a mission or to have an end game in my mind. I draw out of the necessity to draw without a direction or an objective and if someone is to ask if I am planning to publish a book to showcase my sketches after which, I would say no. If a book does finally happen then so be it. For now, these drawings and sketchbooks are just sitting idly on my shelves. I don't know if I will regret not doing it. It's just too much work (lol).
