your sweet nothing x hoax thoughts have got me thinking... obviously the expression "sweet nothings" is typically used in a positive way, and it seems to be in the song. but then i think about ylm and "do something, babe, say something" and i think about how it seems like he was also giving her (sweet) nothing... idk maybe i'm forcing it too hard but you've got me thinking!

anon, I think a lot of people made similar observations as you did post-Joever/TTPD!

My opinion is that "sweet nothing(s)" is still meant as the way it is commonly understood. "Sweet nothings" are words of affection/flattery a lover says to another. And of course, her turning it into "sweet nothing" in the song is a double meaning, because the conceit is that the subject doesn't demand anything of her when everyone else in the world does and takes her as she is, and they're supposed to be the soft place to land when the world is beating her up.

But I do think in the context of the mashup, the association with it is flipped BECAUSE it becomes so haunting. I find myself running home to your sweet nothings, cause your faithless love's the only hoax I believe in. It's that those words are now empty. It's that those memories don't even exist anymore. (Maybe they never even did.) Because outside they're pushing and shoving, but what you did was just as dark as when they pulled me apart. It's all that you wanted from me was sweet nothing, stood on the cliffside screaming "give me a reason."

Like I said in the tags of the previous post, it's like when in movies they take the musical theme from the beginning of the story (when things are light/happy/loving) and change the key and arrangement in the end to turn that same love theme into a haunting one that is forlorn, anxious, and denotes darkness.

tl;dr it's like: the happy memories she once turned to in her mind have become hollow from the pain that he caused her.
