So the first time I tried to go to Duddell’s London, they had to cancel as they were having technical issues with their kitchen. That was obviously disappointing but luckily, it wasn’t too much longer before I could make it back.
1st up was the foie gras beef on toast. It was the Duddell’s take on the classic prawn toast. It was good but if anything, it was a little too rich. It was a nice twist to a classic dish.
We ordered a Cantonese Dim Sum Symphony. It was a collection of dumplings with prawn, crab and scallops in various combinations. These were really tasty.
You can’t go to Duddell’s and not get the Peking duck. It’s the signature dish and comes with a number of condiments to go with the pancakes. The ones that stood out were the pomelo, pineapple and fennel sugar.
The peking duck looked great, with the skin on the side as well as some slices of juicy looking duck with a nice layer of fat - duck is always pretty fatty but as I always claim, it’s where the flavour is. The pineapple and the pomelo actually went really well with the duck, providing a bit of fruitiness and acidity to cut through the fattiness.
This was the dish of crispy salted chicken. We ordered this as the soya chicken had unfortunately run out for the day. The salt and spice mixture was good but a little bit too salty and so it was a bit difficult to get the right level of seasoning on it. The skin was nice and crispy though and the meat tender too.
The truffle and scallop egg fried rice. Amazingly fragrant with little nuggets of scallop buried in it - so good!
We also ordered mapo tofu. This was awesome; the tofu was so soft and silky and the sauce was just full of flavour. It was delicious!
Monkfish with garlic sprouts and fried dough. The garlic sprouts were a little spicier than I was expecting but it was good that they were. The fried dough added a bit of crunch to the dish as well which was really nice.
As you get the skin in one go, the rest of the deck comes stir fried with some tofu and spring onions. I prefer the rest of the duck but it’s nice that the meat doesn’t go to waste.
This was a huge plate of lobster noodles. I do love lobster noodles and this was a very well done version of it. It was also massive! The flavour was great and the lobster was sweet and tender as well.
The last dish to arrive was black cod. I’ve said this before on many occasions but black cod is soooo good! It flakes off so smoothly and just melts in your mouth.
The dessert was this chocolate concoction with kumquats and sorbet. To be honest, we were pretty stuffed from all the mains and so while this was a nice end to the meal, we were already slipping into food comas. The chocolate base was delicious and was really well balanced with the citrus.
This was a great meal and worth the wait after our first failed attempt to go. I’d definitely recommend it but be careful about ordering too much. The portions are pretty big and so coupled with my habit of over-ordering meant that we pretty much had to be rolled out of the restaurant.
