The Dying Plant

There’s a dying plant in my room.

It won’t stay alive, no matter what I say to it.

It keeps on wilting, shedding leaves, turning brown like its life mission is to perish.

My mother told me to take it out of my room.

Maybe it would be happy somewhere else, she says.

Maybe. But can I bear to be parted with it?

Maybe I want to keep it close.

It will die in this room, and I will watch it go.

How could it be otherwise?
