Lately my chest dysphoria has been pretty mild, but it’s still quite irritating at night when I’m trying to sleep and I just can’t stop thinking about it or it’s making me anxious. So I thought I’d share a simple tip that helps, and truly calms me most nights so I can fall asleep, and I hope this helps at least one other trans guy out there
Obviously you don’t have to be trying to sleep, you can do this whenever it starts to hit. Ok now, close your eyes and imagine yourself in first person. Maybe you’re exactly where you are now, or somewhere else like a pool, or you’re out on a hot day, just anywhere you can be shirtless. Imagine yourself there in a first person view, shirtless. Now look down at your chest. Maybe you have some big pecs, or maybe they aren’t very defined. Maybe you don’t have any at all and that’s fine. Just imagine your chest however you want it to look. Chest hair? A lot, none, or somewhere in between? Maybe you can see your surgery scars. Maybe not, it’s up to you if the scars are something you want to include. Hell you can even think of what you want your nipples to look like, it’s completely up to you! Just imagine your chest how you want it because one day you will have it! Once you can see your chest clearly, maybe imagine yourself running your hand along it. Try to imagine the skin (or hair too) touching your fingers. Another big thing is emotions. Imagining yourself happy, content, or satisfied as you touch your chest. Convincing my brain that the things I’m feeling, physically and emotionally, are very real, helps calm me down most times, even enough to help me sleep or do other things/tasks. Again, convincing your brain that this is real is the biggest part that helps!
I know this won’t help every trans guy, but I hope it does at least one. This is probably something that maybe most trans guys do, and if someone else has already said this, i haven’t seen it. This usually helps me most days/nights, but doesn’t always do the trick, usually depending on how dysphoric I’m feeling. Chest dysphoria can be a bitch sometimes but again, I really hope this helps someone because we all need a break from it eventually, even if it’s temporary.
