Ebony Buckle
Avid Vodka readers will remember Ebony Buckle. I’ve reviewed three of her tracks over the last year and change. There’s a reason for that: Buckle’s voice! It is at once beautiful, clear, and precise lyrically. While the storyline may not be perfectly clear, this leaves a space for the listener’s interpretation. The best creative minds have always written this way. They know their lyrical intended meaning, but they allow the listener space to experience their own vision. Enter Wild Woman, the single released back in July (seen/heard here), and another single off of the debut long-player (LP) Disco Lasers, due sometime this year.
Lyrically, Wild Woman is a nod to Buckle’s inner self; The one that keeps her on course. In her words:
“The one who has taught me to tend to my inner power, to keep me on the path that is truest to myself, to trust my own intuition and to take up space in the world.”
It is surprising to me, that a voice that is so powerful and beautiful, is wrapped up in a person who struggles with confidence. For Buckle, tapping the Wild Woman inside gives her the power to move forward musically.
It’s hard to think of Ebony Buckle as not having released an LP. Every single she has released has been a polished gem, the sort that usually announces an LP. Yet these singles have existed on their own up to now, teasers that can increase the excitement of the LP’s eventual release. With Wild Woman released, let’s hope that the LP is right around the corner!

Note: Unfortunately, we are still dealing with Covid 19. The variants are making a comeback, which means that the livelihoods of artists like Ebony Buckle and many others are still threatened. If your situation allows it, consider purchasing more in these tough times. Please, if you are physically able to do so, get the vaccine! –Vodka

Reflected in these songs is our humanity - our wants and needs, our struggles to fit in or break out. Throughout all of this is the hope that we can connect, that we can see the magnificent beauty of our universe and that we can grow and learn and evolve without fear.

It was only June of last year that Vodka discovered Ebony Buckle with the review for Ghost. I say only, as it seems an interminably long time ago in the pandemic ravaged world we currently live. Since that time, Ebony Buckle has continued to create, making music with her partner Nick Burns, by tapping into her faithful Patreon followers to raise funds to keep the music and videos flowing. Wonder (seen / heard here) (released February 1, 2021) is another masterpiece of musical creation, mining the story of the whale known as 52, sometimes referred to as the loneliest whale, and turning it on its head as the whale explores a universe rather than the sea floor.
Yet Wonder has nothing to do with the whale. It is simply a symbol of our own world and our own exploration. Buckle challenges us to take another look at our relative worlds and see the wonder, the beauty, the hope. Sometimes I tend to repeat myself, but I will unapologetically say again that this is exactly what we need as humans: to see the beauty and hope, to look at what surrounds us with the awe it is deserved.
Buckle’s voice is so pristine here. It rings like a bell struck, including the light echo applied to the mix, that could obscure the lyrics if it weren’t for her flawless diction. The music here is designed to be, and is, magical. It is a light composition, dreamy, simply there to add texture to Ebony Buckle’s pipes. Lyrically, the whale calls out, describing what it observes, detailing the wonder, looking for a response that never comes.
As musicians go, Ebony Buckle has consistently made great, sometimes eclectic, tunes. This is pop music for a more sophisticated and diverse palate, which just means that you won’t find it formulaic or imitative. You can find more information on her web site, which links to all of her other content. Watch for the release of her debut long-player, Disco Lasers, from which Wonder comes, due out in the next few months.
Like the mythical whale from Wonder, we could do worse than looking at our own environment and appreciating what surrounds us. Watch for the release of Disco Lasers and pick it up when it releases.
