Chile versus Disney: The Forgotten Precedent of Cultural Studies/ Chile contra Disney: el olvidado precedente de los estudios culturales.
Those who pass by here will know what a cultural study is, or at least will have encountered echoes of it in the form of newspaper articles or YouTube videos. I'm talking about academic works studying popular culture to find reflections of a society's racism, its position on women, and similar works. Simplifying greatly, we could say it's a trend that came from English-speaking universities. But did you know that the first text we could call this was published in the 1970s, written in Spanish and in Chile? We're talking About Reading Donald Duck...
The video from the ever-reliable Café Kyoto will tell you about the analysis it contains and the logic of power to convey hidden messages (what the US president's political advisors called "soft power"), and the need to be wary of theoretically depoliticized content that only aims to entertain. You'll have to watch it with automatic subtitles if you're not fluent in Spanish, while interested Spanish speakers will find the downloadable book at the end of the post.
Social, political, and intellectual analysis of these mass cultural products is now common, although it's often lacking in depth because either the mechanisms of popular fiction and its traditions are unknown, or the analysis is merely a superficial, bar-room-chat tantrum condemning paranoid elements of what they call "woke." However, this was an original and courageous idea for its time. If you recall, I mentioned that I read Pasolini's newspaper columns because I was looking for his critiques of Disney's imperialist cultural invasion, and I told you about a certain book by Umberto Eco in which he addressed the sector of the enlightened left that tended to despise imported pop culture. But I'd better finish now and let you enjoy the video and the book if you'd like. Kisses.
Besos.

We continue with the books I've been putting off since the days of the other blog. The German word for not feeling at home (more or less) translates easily into English as 'uncanny,' but it's more nuanced than that. Sigmund Fred served to talk about the strange feeling some dreams give us, or the heart of terror, or the weird. And where can I expand on this issue that came up when I was telling you about Mark Fisher's work? Well, that's why I saved this book, which it was shared (among others) by @spaceintruderdetector
Explores the conceptualization of the Freudian uncanny in various late-twentieth-century theoretical and critical discourses (literary studies, psychoanalysis, cultural studies, art history, trauma studies, architecture, etc.).
The Unconcept The Freudian Uncanny in Late-Twentieth-Century Theory
The Unconcept is the first genealogy of the concept of the Freudian uncanny, tracing the development, paradoxes and movements of this negative concept through various fields and disciplines from psychoanalysis, literary theory and philosophy to film studies, genre studies, sociology, religion, architecture theory, and contemporary art. Anneleen Masschelein explores the vagaries of this 'unconcept' in the twentieth century, beginning with Freud's seminal essay 'The Uncanny,' through a period of conceptual latency, leading to the first real conceptualizations in the 1970s and then on to the present dissemination of the uncanny to exotic fields such as hauntology, the study of ghosts, robotics and artificial intelligence. She unearths new material on the uncanny from the English, French and German traditions, and sheds light on the specific status of the concept in contemporary theory and practice in the humanities. This essential reference book for researchers and students of the uncanny is written in an accessible style. Through the lens of the uncanny, the familiar contours of the intellectual history of the twentieth century appear in a new and exciting light.
Anneleen Masschelein is Assistant Professor in Literary Theory and Cultural Studies at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium and Postdoctoral Researcher at the National Fund of Scientific Research, Flanders.
