Houses in Oman Desert
Even though we're grossly over-consuming the planet's resources, there are still billions around the world who are, by any humane standards, under-consuming. Yet those in the richest nations still seek ever more and more. If it's the case that we're in ecological overshoot while billions still need to lift their living conditions to live well, that implies that the most over-consuming regions need to contract. Not through recession, but through deliberate reduction.
LIVING SUSTAINABLY IN THE CITY (2018)
The conventional approach of most architects, when faced with a site, has been to think only of how a building will sit upon it, perhaps with some landscaping as an afterthought. But we waste a huge opportunity if we don’t think of the whole site as a resource, and the structure and its environment as a mutually beneficial and productive ecosystem. These days it’s more important than ever to make the most of the land surrounding our buildings, and this short film looks at how one household is doing this, on a typical suburban plot in Melbourne. I’ve watched a lot of videos from these filmmakers recently, many of which look at resilient homes, but all of which focus primarily on sustainable food production. They explore how we can work with the natural environment in a symbiotic manner, to provide resources such as food and power ourselves, in a healthy, renewable way.
The changes which are needed to create a more sustainable and just society have to happen on multiple levels - through state, governmental and even global, policy, but also through the decisions of architects and placemakers. Perhaps most importantly - and empoweringly - these changes must also happen through the choices we make within our own homes and daily lives.
