Mayflower

Le Mayflower est le nom du navire qui amena des dissidents puritains (appelés Pères pèlerins) en Amérique du Nord en 1620. Il s'agissait d'un type de voilier connu sous le nom de carraque à trois mâts avec des voiles carrées sur le mât principal et le prémât, trois ponts (supérieur, canon et cargaison), mesurant environ 27 m de long et 7 m de large. Les passagers pèlerins, et ceux qui n'étaient pas affiliés à ce groupe, étaient cantonnés sur le pont des armes (également connu sous le nom d'entrepont comme il se trouvait entre les deux autres) qui, avec ses 8 petits canons, 4 canons moyens entre autres, était réduit à une surface habitable d'environ 21 m. La trentaine de membres d'équipage et le capitaine demeuraient sur le pont supérieur du gaillard d'avant et du gaillard d'arrière, qui comportaient également des enclos pour les animaux. Les marchandises pour le voyage étaient entreposées dans la soute et les passagers voyageaient dans l'entrepont. Il n'y avait pas de fenêtres sur l'entrepont et le plafond ne mesurait que 1,5 m de haut, sans latrines ni pièces privées; telles étaient les conditions de vie des 102 passagers entre le 6 septembre et le 11 novembre 1620.
