An Armenian-Ottoman Heirloom

This stunning belt reflects the fashion of late-Ottoman Armenian jewellery. It is made up of fifteen rectangular panels alternating views of buildings, vegetal scrolls and royal monograms. The most prominent of these, located at the centre of the belt, carries the stylised coat of mail of the Ottoman dynasty.

Made by the master jeweller and watchmaker Vahe Khatchigian as a gift for his wife Akabi, the belt passed down various generations of Armenian women in the family until the present time. Displaced following the Hamidian massacres of 1894–96, the descendants moved to Egypt first, before settling in Sudan and Ethiopia, and eventually reaching England in the 1970s, where some of them still live today.

Mursi Warrior (Omo Valley, Ethiopia 2014) As I made this portrait of a Mursi Warrior, it struck me how even men would wear such elaborate the head ornaments, a sign of social status within the tribe. The Mursi are a Nilotic pastoralist ethnic group that inhabits southwestern Ethiopia deep inside the Tama Wildlife Reserve.
