Episode 1274: Who’s To Your Liking...?

Translator Notes:

There’s what might be a neat Japanese pun in the first panel that I thought I should note, as there wasn’t really any way to translate it.  The term in question describing the location of Sandalphon’s wings is seotta, which can literally mean that something is being carried on one’s back, but can also figuratively mean that one has been burdened with something.  In the case of Sandalphon’s wings, both meanings can potentially apply - they are literally on his back, but they represent a power that he has been burdened with, too.

Also, full disclosure: large portion of the lines in this comic are very loosely translated to make things sound as natural as possible.  Comics featuring the Lowain Bros are pretty much always like that.

Translator Note:

Kuso, the word I translated here to “crappy”, is an interesting Japanese word.  It technically refers to excrement, and is most often used in a negative fashion that indicates derision of what it’s associated with, but either way it’s a very versatile word - just look at its variety of definitions in a Japanese to English dictionary.  It’s a bit equivalent to “fuck” in English - you can use “fuck” as an exclamation (”fuck you”), a verb (”go fuck yourself”), as an intensifier (”fucking amazing”), and in many other contexts to express some sort of strong emotion.

Mind you, kuso isn’t strictly vulgar in the same way as “fuck” is, as Japanese doesn’t really have any conception of “bad words” - no word is inherently “bad”; it all depends on who’s saying it, who they’re saying it to, how it’s being said, and other components of the context.  But it’s used in a very similar way, in that it generally expresses some sort of strong emotion about something rather than fulfilling a specific semantically denotative purpose.

As such, it’s yet another word in our list of “Japanese words that are hard to translate”!  It’s often rendered as “fucking”, “shitty”, etc., but obviously a localizer wants to make sure that the language selected is appropriate at the level of an English audience that’s the same as the intended Japanese audience of the original media.  So I toned it down a bit here and went with “crappy” instead.
