Description
King Charles II of Spain died on November 1, 1700, after recognizing Philip of France, Duke of Anjou, as his heir. On November 16, in the Cabinet of the Council at Versailles, Louis XIV presented his new king to the Spanish ambassador Castel dos Rios, who knelt before him. This scene is allegorically depicted in Henri de Favanne's painting. In the clouds, the genius of Spain points to the young sovereign, presented by France (in white, the color of the Bourbons, and blue, the color of the French monarchy) to a kneeling Spain, which offers him the crown.
