Their Importance: Pose is revolutionary, mainly due to the fact that the cast is almost entirely made up of black and latinx transwomen actresses and it’s centred on the unvarnished, rarely-seen lives of trans women and gay men living and in the ball scene of 80s/90s New York. There’s compassionate, humanizing focus on the transphobia, poverty and HIV outbreaks the main characters have to live with. There’s also several moments of heroism- no straight/white saviors here-, found families forming to help each other, characters achieving their dreams without it ending in tragedy and constant dazzling sequences of the creative ball culture that brings the cast together.

Issues: The transphobic murder of a secondary character in the second series has been the subject of heated debate with some seeing the plot as a sensitive and moving spotlight on an issue that desperately needs to be addressed, especially as an entire heavily emotional episode is dedicated to the cast saying goodbye to her instead of being a shock-value one-off and others seeing it as more of the usual lurid tragedy porn especially as the creators previously promised to avoid the usual tragic clichés.
