My elf is sad

My elf seems to be upset with me. I have not talked about eating it for more then a day! It can't be that...

I asked it what its problem was and it said that calling it "it" was mean. I asked what it was and it cried that that was obvious...

#elf gender #this is technically relevant to non elf gender worldbuilding but i'm thinking about in the context of what genders can get married

Honestly though, it makes no sense for elf gender to be like that. It makes zero sense for elves to have a similar concept of gender to modern western humans (except even more limited because some humans here are aware of trans/nonbinary stuff). Like, the only reason they share that concept of gender is because that's how Shannon views gender, or did at the time of writing it. She probably just didn't even consider that it would be different for elves because she didn't recognize the possibility of an understanding of gender outside of her own limited perspective.

I don't really blame her, since it's not super realistic to expect that a cishet white woman in 2012 would have in depth ideas about how no understanding of gender is universal and a fictional non-human species would very likely have an entirely different system for gender, because it's hard to imagine a system outside of the one you live in yknow? But since it is no longer 2012 and I am not a cishet woman, I am having those in depth ideas and I am making it everyone else's problem
