Eli Sanders does a masterful job painting the lives of Teresa Butz and Jennifer Hopper, a beautiful way to pay homage to victims of a vicious crime. Sanders also does the difficult work of showing the humanity of their attacker. So often when I’ve read or watched true crime stories, the perpetrators are portrayed as fundamentally broken- a separate species altogether. While the City Slept forces readers to consider cracks in our mental health and criminal justice systems as well as family units.
