What are your opinions on laser printing for prints and buttons? Yes, inkjet is better, but is using a laser printer BAD? I work in a print shop where we use laser printers, so it would be sooo much easier/cheaper if I could make them there, but is there a taboo about using laser instead of inkjet? Is your print worth less this way? I also read that laser prints can possibly ruin buttons/pins but I also thought I saw somewhere that you used laser on yours? Thanks for any input!
Kiriska: Yeah, I normally use FedEx Office’s laser printers for my button art since I don’t own a color printer myself. Since buttons are so small and because the art for my buttons doesn’t tend to be very detailed, I think the difference is pretty negligible. I don’t know how laser printing can ruin buttons unless you’re printing on a heavier paper stock than your button machine can handle? And then it’s a paper issue, not a printing issue. I also use a laser printer to print zines/minicomics.
I don’t like laser printing for prints anymore though. In the past I’ve had banding happen a lot, color problems, and just generally lower-quality prints produced via laser printers, and I personally noticed enough of a quality gap that I wasn’t comfortable selling those prints. A lot of people can’t tell the difference and don’t mind the lower quality, but I could tell, and it bothered me.
This, of course, is a personal thing, and if you feel that your laser printers produce perfectly good prints, then by all means, go for it! There’s also nothing wrong with using laser printers for now and then upgrading to better quality stuff later. That’s how I started out too, after all.
Nattosoup: I own a small Dell laser printer, and I use it to print all my con stuff now, with the exception of prints. It does a great job handling mini comics, buttons, and signage, and although I sometimes need to tweak colors slightly in Photoshop for best results, it’s saved me a lot of time and money.
If you’re happy with the print quality, and can print on the paper you want, there’s nothing wrong with using a laser printer. Many artists hit up Office Max/Depot to top off on prints if they run out mid-con.
Hi guys! Do you know of any southeastern cons off the top of your head that would be good to sell original art only at? I was scoping out a local con this year but out of the entire alley I only found two artists that weren't selling fan art (and they weren't doing so good). I know fan art sells but I'd like to AA somewhere that showcases more original stuff rather than being drowned in fan art. Thanks a bunch!
Kiriska: Uhhhh, Dragon*Con? I don’t think D*C prohibits fanart, but a higher percentage of artists do bring original work there. MTAC has a 70% original art, 30% fanart rule, but I don’t know how well they enforce it. Ohayocon’s AA is original art only, though they aren’t quite “southeast.”
Nattosoup: You might want to try craft fairs and indie cons a shot. NOCAZ-fest in New Orleans might be a good show for you, or Handmade and Bound in Nashville. If you’re willing to make an investment, Jazzfest (New Orleans), The Tomato Festival (Nashville), The Cherry Blossom Festival (Nashville), or TACA (Nashville), might all be things to look into.
A commission of a very cute mascot I made for the The Meticulous Moose etsy shop! The mascot was super fun to do and the items for sale there are absolutely adorable!
