ok a little something for #SugdenDingleSunday (thanks to @emma-dale17 for the name, I’m going to try keep it up every Sunday)

it kinda turned into a sugden sibling fic though

“Hiya!” Vic said, way too cheery for a regular Sunday afternoon as Robert answered her video call. He was still in his pj’s and had every intention to keep it that way for the rest of the day.

“Hey.” he greeted her. “What’s up?”

“What are your plans for tea?”

Robert turned to look at Aaron who was lounging on the sofa with Ruby napping on his chest. He gave him a shrug and a look that said “you deal with this”.

“I don’t know. Nothing really. We might order something. Why?”

“Let’s have a family barbecue!” Vic suggested, a bright smile on her face.

“Maybe some other time Vic, none of us are exactly dressed for the occasion.” Robert showed her himself, then turned the phone to Aaron who waved at her from the sofa, and Seb who was mesmerised by some cartoon on TV. “We’re having a lazy day.”

“You can still do that. We have all this food, it’s way too much for the three of us. We can come over to yours so you don’t even have to leave the house.” Vic said, showing him the bowls and dishes on her kitchen counter.

“You’ve already decided haven’t you?”

“Oh come on Robert, don’t be boring. It’ll be nice... Sunday dinner with the family. We’ve never done that even though we live just down the road from each other.”

That’s because your last boyfriend turned out to be gay and a murderer. Robert wanted to say but bit his tongue.

“I suppose it would be nice to have a little family tradition...” he said instead.

Vic beamed.

“See? I knew you’d see sense.” She said, moving around the kitchen. “We’ll come over to yours, you have the bigger garden. You don’t have to do anything but open the door. I’ll set everything up and you boys can just hang out together.”

“You don’t have to do everything Vic, I can help you.”

“That’s ok, I can manage.” Vic said, not looking at the screen anymore. “Have you got Ruby onto solids yet? Or else I’ve got some mashed fruit Harry likes with his chips, I’ll bring that. Is Liv home? I forgot if she’s on a diet for her epilepsy.”

“No, Liv’s gone away with Vinny for the weekend. I don’t know when they’ll be back.” Robert sighed, watching his sister flit around her kitchen.

“Well we’ll have plenty of food if they come back before tea.” Vic told him. “I’m going to pack everything up, we’ll be at yours in an hour.” she said and ended the call.

“Looks like we’re having a family barbecue.” Robert said and pushed himself up from the armchair. “I’m going to get dressed... and find something for him to wear.” he nodded at Seb.

“Get his swim shorts.” Aaron told him “And Ruby’s bathing suit. We’ll fill up the pool so they can play in it and we can still take it easy.”

 A little over an hour later Vic was dishing up food in their kitchen and putting dishes in the fridge while Aaron and Ellis kept an eye on the kids in the garden. She’d told Robert to sit down and enjoy himself but he felt bad about letting her do all the work.

“Do you have a blender? I can make smoothies for the kids. Or milkshakes.”

“They’ll be fine with just juice, Vic. Why are you so stressed?” Robert asked, leaning on the counter next to his sister.

“I don’t know... I just want everyone to have a nice time.”

“They are.”

Seb and Harry’s happy shrieks drifted into the house through the open door and Robert gave her a “See?” look.

Vic smiled and then turned back to the food she’d been preparing.

“What are you two doing for father’s day next week?” she asked, trying to sound casual.

“Uhm... I’m not sure. I think Aaron will make his famous fry up... and Seb already told me he made something for both of us at nursery.” Robert smiled. “But other than that... I don’t know.”

“So you’re not doing presents then?”

“Sort of. I got Aaron a card and I’m teaching Seb to write his own name in it... and he bought Seb a hoodie a while back and I got him one that looks just like it in his size. So they match.”

Vic nodded.

“That’s nice.”

“Are you getting Ellis something from Harry?” Robert asked and by the way his sister froze for a second he figured he’d found what was bothering her.

“I... I don’t know.” Vic said, putting the knife she was holding down and looking at Robert. “We haven’t been together that long... but Harry loves him.”

“And he loves Harry. Anyone can see that.”

“Yeah... he’s so good with him too. Last night he had a nightmare and he wanted Ellis to help scare away the monsters and tuck him back in...”

Robert smiled, thinking of how Seb usually preferred Aaron to deal with the monsters under his bed too.

“He called him dadda.”

“Harry called Ellis that?”

“Yeah... and Ellis just picked him up and carried him back to bed... and I listened to him talk to him through the baby monitor...”

“Did he say it again?”

“No... but he did this morning. He gave him a piece of his banana and said for dadda.”

“Vic that’s great. What did Ellis say about it?”

“Nothing really. He just took the banana from him and tried to get him to eat the rest of his breakfast... but he seemed happy... “

“That’s good, isn’t it?”

Suddenly their conversation was interrupted by a blood curling scream coming from the garden. Both of them dropped everything and ran outside, only to see both Aaron and Ellis with a crying boy in their arms.

“What happened? Who died?” Robert asked.

“Harry slipped and fell.” Aaron explained. “And the screaming and the splash startled Seb.”

“Shh... it’s ok Harry, dadda’s got you.” Ellis said to the boy in his arms, cradling him against his chest. “Dadda’s got you.”

Robert gently nudged his sister to go join her family while he walked over to Aaron and Seb and hugged and kissed them both. Ruby had woken up from all the commotion and curiously looked around when Robert picked her up.

He thought about how he’d almost lost everything. How one night out gone bad almost ruined all of their lives.

But now, a little over two years later, they’d all come out stronger, and most importantly, happier than ever.

To ensure viewers didn’t miss out when Emmerdale episodes ran out, the production team made a bold decision to make a special set of six episodes. These special ‘lockdown episodes’, featuring very reduced cast and crew, had strict measures in place and tried to reflect the strange times we are experiencing during COVID19 and were all produced, written and shot in an impressive turn around.

Unsurprisingly, these different episodes were divisive, with some viewers not enjoying the change of pace but others embracing the show’s efforts to entertain us even in these challenging times. Rather than being ‘boring’ or ‘slow’, the episodes felt like mini plays, a back-to-basics look at the nuts and bolts of what soaps should be. Far from the stunt filled, plot centred, sometimes unrealistic, heightened drama of the soaps we’re used to, it was a return to character-led writing, simpler set-ups and a welcome focus on relationships and deeper emotions. More of this style of writing please!!

For someone like me who loves when regular Emmerdale takes the time to delve deep into characterisation, these special episodes were a treat and a resounding success.
