A Palaeoecological Reconstruction of the Ember Twin Lakebed

Hey folks! We are so excited to share with you all our submission for the @outerwilds-events History and Science Fair!

The Ember Twin Lakebed is a fascinating geological site, filled with clues about the planet's history and long-extinct occupants in the form of its numerous fossils. We've given the site a thorough survey and have come up with some pretty neat ideas as to what Ember Twin may have looked like all those years ago, when life was still plentiful on this now desert planet!

Journal Entry #6: Ember Twin

Traveling to the Hourglass Twins was one(two?) of the places I've been looking forward to seeing the most! The only thing I did not like about it is that they're soooooo dangerously close to the sun

My first two attempts getting to Ember Twin resulted in flying into the sun... Not backwards this time

What happened was basically this: I couldn't target either of the twins, I tried to get closer, apparently got too close; boom! Dead

Buuuuut what matters is that during my third attempt, I made it to Ember Twin (relatively) safe 🙏

And I met Chert!!!

Let me start off by saying: they're CUUUUTE!!! it's probably because Chert's a little guy, and small things are adorable! :D they're small and cute (I hope they like being called cute) AND THEIR SPACESUIT HELMET RESEMBLES AN EGG!!! HAHAHAHA

As the time goes on, they get progressively more nervous until they fully crash out when they realise everything's dying :< I didn't notice at first how their dialogue changes over the course of the loop and kind of accidentally discovered it. But then again, I should've considered it T_T I'm paying more attention to dialogues now! I don't want to miss extra conversations again!!! (All in all it's a reminder to be more observant of the surroundings, and I call myself observant... Pathetic.........😔)

Anyways, I'd definitely give Chert a hug if they'd allow it or provide some comfort! At the very end, when they invite Hatchy to sit for a while to watch the stars die

THE SUNLESS CITY!!! Is marvelous and cool, the sand? Not so cool, nope. I got poor Hatchy crushed multiple times by the sand when I was exploring the caves and tried to locate the city... Later on I managed to find easier ways in, it almost made me wish I had found it sooner </3 but it's really fun to explore, that's the whole point

Also where I found out the Nomai wanted to make the sun go supernova on purpose xC I could understand Idaea for not being fond of Pye's humour about sun explosions... Admirable confidence of hers that everything would go right, though (I do like Pye LOL)

Gotta add something about the Anglerfish as well: okay, before I got to see the fossil in the Anglerfish Overlook, I thought they were smaller. HOWEVER... THEY'RE HUMONGOUS?! AND I NEED TO GET PAST THOSE IN DARK BRAMBLE?? I'M SCARED

Not-so-honourable mention: the dang Nomai skeletons within the Ember Twin caves... Quantum this, quantum that;; NO! These things are HAUNTED and no one can tell me otherwise--- one spawned right behind my back when I turned around, it spooked the living daylights out of me, AND IT IS WAS HEADLESS, TOO?

And then the next moment, not headless??? Please leave me alone. I love the Nomai, but not this, I don't like this
