Interview #66: Emily-Jane Robinson

London, UK. q: What does photography mean to you? a: It's my way of remembering but its also my way of seeing. I've always been like it, always looking, always feeling so much in some moments. When I found photography, I guess all of that looking before just made sense and all of it was able to be stored and saved for others to see too. Other photographers and photographs that I love the most do the same kind of things for me as well.

q: What is video project "HYBRID" about? How did you go about doing it? a: Hybrid was originally conceived as an interactive website in 2007 that I quickly made for a class while doing my BA at UCLA. My friends and I filmed ourselves using the iSight camera on my Macbook Pro on the different coloured walls around my apartment that I was living in in Los Angeles at the time. We each filmed our videos while we were alone in the space with the Macbook. The concept is derived from the idea of the camera functioning as a mirror– something that we had never been able to experience before the iSight came out. There were no specific instructions and the direction that each film took was decided upon by the participant as they underwent their own personal exploration during the filming. On the website where I originally showcased the completed work, each page was set up in a grid of 9 like you can view on the video on my website now. There were grids dedicated to each individual and the main page was the complete grid of all 9 unique videos. The user could start and stop each of the individual videos on each page by the click of their mouse. I plan to put the website back up on the internet soon, however, I just got lazy perfecting the code and abandoned it really. I show it now as a four-channel video installation.

q: Do you prefer hot or cold weather? a: 70 °F partially cloudy is my ideal weather! I haven't seen much of that since I moved to London. However, that was every fall, winter and spring day in Los Angeles. q: Any new music to recommend? a: My boyfriend's band Villa Cola, Crystal Stilts and always always Kurt Vile.
